For the past several years, I have been leading a team in assembling a massive unofficial expansion pack for the classic LucasArts game Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds. Our mod adds a long list of improvements and features to the game, in addition to hundreds of new units and props from every corner of the Star Wars universe. However, since day one we've continuously hit a large snag, which is a lack of talented artists who can develop new designs and 3D modelers/animators to bring them to life. Star Wars would be nothing without its diverse range of interesting and unique characters and creatures, and we want to be able to add as many of these as possible, from both the new Canon and Legends worlds. We can't do that without your help.

About the Game:

Galactic Battlegrounds is a 2.5D Real-Time Strategy game, built from the same engine as Age of Empires 2. It originally launched in 2001, featuring 6 civilizations from the Star Wars universe: the Galactic Empire, Rebel Alliance, Trade Federation, Royal Naboo, Gungans, and Wookiees. An expansion pack in 2002 added the Galactic Republic and Confederacy. Our mod, so far, has added two civilizations to the game - the Zann Consortium, originally featured in Star Wars Empire at War; and the Geonosians, as seen in Attack of the Clones. We have over a dozen more planned, but our shortage of 2D and 3D artists is a huge setback for us.

About the Requirements:

Concept Artists: Battlegrounds, like Age of Empires before it, uses a very distinct art style for its architecture. Just by looking at a building, you can immediately tell: what type of structure it is, what civilization it belongs to, and how far down the Tech tree they've advanced. We need artists that are able to meet that criteria with new and interesting designs for the dozens of new civilizations we have planed for Expanding Fronts. In addition to this, we will also need designs for new infantry, droids, tanks, spacecraft, boats, and artillery where pre-existing canon designs aren't available.

3D Artists: The requirements to help us out aren't very demanding, amateurs are certainly welcome to lend a hand. Because SWGB is a sprite-based game, the amount of detail we need on infantry models and animations is not particularly high, as can be seen in renders of official game units. Most units have four main animation sequences: Standing, Walking, Attacking, and Dying. Special units like Jedi and Workers have additional sequences such as using force powers or gathering resources. Generally, all of these animations are rather simple, typically ranging from 8-16 frames each.

No technical knowledge of SWGB or AoK modding is needed; we can handle all of that on our end. All that's required is a 3D program capable of orthographic/parallel projection, and the ability to render the animations as a series of 2D images (using the correct camera/lighting setup for Battlegrounds) that we can convert into in-game sprites.

Thanks!

We've accomplished things never thought possible with Galactic Battlegrounds, and we have huge plans for our mod, But we need a lot more hands on deck to keep the ball rolling at an acceptable pace. We hope somebody out there has the time, knowledge, and willingness to help us out. If you, or anybody you know might be interested in lending a hand, please leave a comment, or get in touch with me through PM.
