Ah yes, the battle of Narendra III in 2344.
One of, if not THE most honorable act of self-sacrifice in star trek history.

An act that had significant political repercussions, for it drove the Klingons and the Federation much closer together.
Which in turn would lead to a peace treaty between the two Alpha Quadrant powers.

Poor Romulans, what were they thinking.
I guess the lessons from Admiral Valdore were lost on them.

Then somebody snuck some modern photon torpedos into the torpedo bay of the older enterprise.

No one ever found out how it was that the outmatched Federation starship destroyed all its Romulan foes, but needless to say, the battle was so harsh not a single torpedo was left unfired...

(Long live the Terran em *Cough* I mean Federation)

I always find it interesting how in almost every alternate history that the Klingons are far stronger than the Federation, yet not in the Prime Timeline.

I suppose the Klingons have an advantage in that thdir culture favours military prowess and their fleet is built primarily for war.

I would say they are equally stronger in the Prime Timeline... it's just that all major conflicts have been averted in some manner (Organians for example).
Just look how it went when they got into a brief war right before the Dominion War, the Federation was hard pressed for Defense against the Klingon Onslaught and even then it wasn't the full might of the Empire.

Description

"Captain, I would be lying to you if I told you there was a chance in hell of coming out of this alive. Why doesn't your ship come back with us? The Romulans would be no match for your weaponry."

"I can't do that."

"No, I suppose not. You don't belong in our time any more than we belong in yours. To be honest, Picard, a significant number of my crewmembers have expressed a desire to return, even knowing the odds. Some because they can't bear to live without their loved ones, some because they don't like the idea of slipping out in the middle of a fight. But I have told them that in the here and now, the Federation needs another ship against the Klingons. And we'd better get used to being in the here and now."

"But if you go back, it could be a great deal more helpful. The war is going very badly for the Federation, far worse than is generally known. Starfleet Command believes defeat is inevitable. Within six months we may have no choice but to surrender."

"And you're saying all this may be a result of our being here?"

"One ship will make no difference in the here and now. But twenty-two years ago, one ship may have stopped this war before it started."

"Mr. Castillo. Inform the crew, we're going back... The Romulans will get a good fight. We'll make it one for the history books."

"I know you will, Captain."
