Rome Returns is an Age of empires 1 replica mod with AoC features, based on yty's abandoned project. Not just translated it back to English, fixed gamebreaking bugs, tooltips/missing text lines, hotkeys, tech tree, many graphics and icons, but also I added campaigns, working Ai and lot of AoC elements like Trade Cart and unique theme music for civs.

Not just translated it back to English, fixed gamebreaking bugs, tooltips/missing text lines, hotkeys, tech tree, many graphics and icons, but also I added campaigns, working Ai and lot of AoC elements like Trade Cart and unique theme music for civs. You can check full change log here.

HOW TO INSTALL:

1. Download the mod, and unpack it to Age of empires II main folder. Default location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\ (the zip file contain all necessary folders)

2. Start the game with your Rome Returns.exe (can be found in Age2_x1\ subdirectory) to play!

About the Campaign
To play the Campaign start the game and click Rome Returns Campaign. You can choose from 11 campaign with total 64 maps, and can use 3+1 difficult settings.

You can also download Campaign as Scenarios from here.

About the Ai
Userpatch is required!
You can choose from two Ai for the mod:
Rome_RM_Ai and Rome_Only_DM (both was made by Tegla)
User Posted Image
Rome_RM_Ai: Supports most of map and land types. You can also type "14" to give a middle difficult between Hard and Hardest, also Ai follows the "31" signal on minimap.

Rome_Only_DM: This Ai is suggested for good players only. For the biggest challenge use the following settings (2k and above 1v1 ratting is essential):
- Teams: 1vs1
- Civilization : Scythian
- Location: GA
- Size: Tiny (2-player)
- Difficulty: Hardest
- Resources: DM
- Starting Age: Post Iron Age
- Population: 200
- Reveal Map: any
- Victory: Conquest
- All Techs: No

Hi there. Fantastic mod. Basically exactly what I was looking for.

However, I've tried editing the Gamedata files to take away the option for the AI to resign, or at least make it less likely. Yet, after editing, the game won't launch. Is the Gamedata file protected in some way? How can I get around this?

Examples: I've tried deleting all the defrules to do with (goal 1 19) and (goal 1 9).
I've also tried a very simple edit of changing the gametime to > 30000 instead of > 300. If the AI wants to resign after I've been playing the same scenario for over 8 hours, I wouldn't blame it!
But these simple edits to the Gamedata file means the Rome Returns exe crashes and quits before launching.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Genuinely would be a perfect mod for an amazing game if I could stop the AI resigning. (It also ruins the campaigns and makes specific scenario objectives in my created campaigns pointless).

Thanks!

**EDIT**: I found a fix, however it requires using Turtle Pack and the DRS editor. Once you have those programs, it is actually pretty quick. If anyone in future sees this and is interested, leave me a comment and I'll help you out.

Creator of this mod,
I have reviewed the game, you can see there, but still a lot more suggestions:

Add new graphics for Heavy horse archer, Heavy Catapult, Heleopolis, Juggernaut.
Add the Legion Graphic(with tower shield) from age of empires 2 forgotten empires, to Legion.
Add Spearman to Tool age, and Pikeman to Bronze age (For some civs).
Add some more utility to Axeman.
Add a upgrade to increase pierce armor or to increase infantry speed.
Add a Javelineer to Archery Range, Cavalry Lancer evolution of Scout and all in bronze age.
Add gates and Horse Javelin, all in Iron age.
Add Germanic (Generic, Norse, Celt etc) and Iberic Civilizations.
The terrain can be as it is right now.
Put snow and roads on some campaing maps.
Make a new snow pine forest tree.
Include animals (Horses, camels, eagles, fish, elehpants)from age of empires 2, and crocodille can be placed on normal grounds.
No rocks on medium and deep water
Line of sight of some units it's too small, it could be increased when advance to bronze and iron ages. It's too difficult to find the villagers to kill ;).
Make Expensive town centers. Costing more Wood, and now Stone. (Because the AI it's too overpowered, and if we destroy one town center it ll be more 4 towns, and the player will immediately build one more)
Put HD music to the game. From the mod UPATCH Age of empires 1.

Bug reports:
the major problem is the AI
just need to improve bugged villagers, and too efficient villagers, barracks units creation, and reduce the number of units, buildings and farms created, it's almost impossible to play. The villager, ships and archers micromanagemant to avoid projectiles it's too damn high! Its too much difficult to play like this in a standard gameplay.
The difficulty it's extreme hard on some campaign maps, and besides another ones are very easy, on the same level of difficulty (Standard).

Hannibal and short swordsman are named wrong.
The second map from carthaginian campaign: the storage pit doesn't work
Chariots, Scouts and camels doesn't benefit with bronze, iron and tower shields. Is that right?

Besides this Congratulations for the mod!!!

Thanks guys!!!
For V 1.3.1
