Rise of the Reds – or ROTR for short – improves upon the C&C Generals formula while also adding its own distinct elements to it. Most notably, the mod adds two completely new factions, the tank-heavy Russian Federation and the defence-oriented European Continental Alliance. In addition, the three original factions China, USA and GLA have been greatly expanded and redesigned in a variety of ways, with several new units, buildings, powers and abilities to explore and combine in your in-game tactics.

Simply put, these guys are supposed to form a contrast with the Partisans, which is why we placed them in the same update: Mercs are among the most violent people in the GLA and their primary motivations are money and adrenaline, whereas the Partisans are seasoned, experienced fighters that make do with minimal equipment and largely fight to protect their homelands. One could go as far as argue that the Partisans are supposed to be sympathetic by GLA standards.

The last phrase rather sounds like the Mercenaries won't slow down upon being low on health, but reather keep on fighting normally.. also does their armament sounds like they could easily take on SEALs ..

My bet is that it is either a

A: buff that reduces the damage they take for a small moment

B: buff that no matter how much damage they received they can't go under 1 hp for a few seconds.
Just like Dazzle's shallow grave from dota 2 :P

So in other words, GLA mercenaries are the modern day equivalent to berserkers.

I'm pretty sure that they will be general Sulaymaan's replacement for the Rebel.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote

MARS2588 - - 960 comments

Not a replacement; both the Mercs and the Partisans are entirely new units that don't replace anything. Mercs will later be exclusive to Sulaymaan while Partisans are currently planned to be available to all GLA Generals.

*shudders* Mercs as basic infantry...The horror...The horror...

Finally some modern tech for the GLA. Also a machete eh?

"Ol' chop chop!"

Just curious: will the GLA consist of more nationalities other than Arabs and Africans? Since IIRC Sulaymaan already has a large influence outside Africa and one of the other generals, Ibrahim, is a cheese ea- I mean French.

Arab and French units seem like a given and there -might- even be some Western-accented units for Ibrahiim.

^ How the hell did 'French' slip in there? Of course I meant to say 'Arab and African', since that's where the GLA draws most of its powerbase from. But still, I personally wish for Ibrahiim to have a few Western turncoats among his ranks to convey his anti-corporate/anti-globalist theme.

Ever thought about some Redneck rising?
Ie: Either pulling Drafts into replacement for casual infantry (upgrade, replaces the normal unit, with SUPER cheap but really HARD SUCKING infantry;
Or as an Ambush-like ability, targetting enemy structures only OR An GP called Hostile Rank Recruit (swaps the enemy units (units only) into your army, got an rather low AoE (incrasing with Level))

Ah! That is one unit you love to hate! Despite of how macabre this might sound I always though that this game deserved a True Villain!

Story-wise, Aleksandr and his Shock Divisions are kinda supposed to be the True Villains whereas most people could also regard the GLA as secondary villains even though their political agenda is still -slightly- justifiable whereas Aleks is simply a sociopath.

The fact that Alexander and his Shock Divisions are Russian has nothing to do with why they are villains, they are simply bad people.

If anything, the way you immidiately came to this conclusion plus how you classified all the GLA as "Arabs" sounds worse than whatever you were implying.

Right. Aleksandr and his bunch aren't villains because they're Russians. They're villains because they're violent, mass-murdering psychos. Beyond that, even the GLA isn't simply branded as the 'evil' faction because of their nationality, but because they have been and will always be a non-state terrorist army, unlike the other factions which represent actual countries.

Description

Honed by a lifetime full of war and bloodshed, these Mercenaries form the elite cadre of Sulaymaan's army. Due to their fierce reputation, they tend to enjoy an air of awe and privilege among the GLA, as they are only ones who can ask their leaders for noticeably higher rewards and walk away with their heads still on their shoulders. Unlike the common rabble, Mercenaries have exclusive access to the GLA's special arsenal of looted local weapons from South Africa, including the Vektor R4 assault rifle, the SS-77 machine gun and the Milkor 40mm grenade launcher. In addition, every Mercenary is armed with the single most common weapon on the African continent: A lethal machete that can kill a person with only a single, well executed swipe. In combat, the Mercenaries are not only feared for their superior weapons and raw brutality, but also for their resilience and fearlessness: It has been reported that these men fire themselves up macabre ceremonies before the battle, putting them in a permanent state of blood-crazed frenzy in which their perception of pain - and morality - is numbed.
