Description

Final reports on the efficacy of the Golem Mk. II project left much to be desired. Although it was redesigned in a way that made it easier to adapt to Russia's existing НТ-28M3 'Sentinel' production, its classified high-density armor and other design quirks, added at Aleksandr's behest, greatly inflated the production time, making them no less complicated than the aberrant construction of the T-279 it was designed to replace. Furthermore, its similarity to the Sentinel would often confuse the uninformed, and on the battlefield it resulted in immediate and overwhelming fire onto any Golem tank, which it would have no chance of surviving. The most embarrassing—and final—nail in the coffin came from the last-minute changes to allow amphibious crossings. During a maneuver to encircle Brest, Aleksandr ordered the crossing of the Bug river near the city, which resulted in a now-infamous image of a dozen stuck Golem tanks, partially submerged and abandoned in the water. No more such maneuvers were attempted after the fact. So great was the humilation and challenge of properly using the vehicle, the General personally ordered all Golem tanks to be recalled from the frontlines and scrapped.

Reeling from the setbacks, the Mk. III development began in earnest. The chassis, originally designed for a heavy self-propelled artillery platform, was uparmored and equipped with hardpoints for support modules in order to meet its new role. The turret was designed from scratch to accommodate the Mk. II gun with a lower vertical footprint and better clearance for the back-mounted heavy machine guns. A reinforced powertrain and inflatable pontoons, absent on the second generation Golem, were now standard issue for every vehicle. Many Russian tank aces were born in the hull of the Golem Mk. III, and even as the tides turned against Russia, they stood fast. Their coilguns burned holes in the enemy's armor; their red, vengeful gaze burned holes in the enemy's soul.
