Give it some time, learn and adapt yourself, and the higher difficulties become a way more enjoyable experience.

Easily the single best take on a modernized Quake 1 experience.

Being made for modern, beefier hardware, just about every aspect of the gameplay and gore is enhanced.
And all while still maintaining the original aesthetic and compatibility with a large number of user-made maps from over the years.

TL;DR: If you enjoy vanilla Quake but feel the very old-school gameplay feels a little too dated, this mod is exactly what you're looking for.

The definitive way to play Quake. Builds upon Quake 1.5 which is often overlooked for no good reason, and adds countless improvements sharing the same design philosophies as GMDXv9, Unreal Evolution, and Turok 2 Plus - all from the same creator. These are designed to provide actual challenge via improved AI, new enemies, and more brutal enemy encounters. No mindless hordes here though.

The end result is: the best of Quake 1.5 (new enemies, levels, secrets, visual enhancements) with an improved arsenal with new functionality, improved AI (as in better movement and decision making), greatly improved and more challenging encounters, and a new Nightmare+ mode which you must play. One of the best things about Nightmare+ is having to deal with the vengeful spirits of some enemies.

The new Reiver enemy is one of the best ever designed enemies for any action game. Ogres are much improved, when fighting Death Knights you'll now fear the possibility of encountering a Warlord, Vores are better than ever, and there are many other fantastic additions to the roster that make combat much more diverse, challenging and thoughtful.

Quake was a great game but not nearly enough of a challenge even on Nightmare mode, bordering on mindless. Combat+ on Nightmare+ mode elevates the game into truly all time great status. Now if only we could get a Combat+ mod for Arcane Dimensions one day...

A continuation of work of Bloodshot. Sadly he abandoned quake 1.5. Of course it was in somewhat finished state, but sadly mod wouldn't receive any further updates. Im glad to see that work for this mod continues by another hand. I wish to see more content in for of new custom levels, monsters and of course weapons. I always feel a lack of arsenal in original quake.

This mod takes everything about Quake and makes it 10x more fun. I never had any issues getting this to run on either low or high end PCs, which is rare.

I technically rate it as 9.5, if the author can get a team together to remake the expansion levels so we can play them with this mod, it is easily a solid 10/10. And should it expand on its features, it would stand up to Brutal Doom.

Sometimes the particles are pitch black or kill the framerate drastically. Depending on monsters, that leads to unplayable situations. So be aware.

Almost fell over while first playing this meth pony (in a positive way) of a mod

Monster models, animations and art style differ a lot. This is very obvious and does not play well together.
Weapons seem to fit more into Q2.

Many reviewing are missing the point. The creator took Quake 1.5 and started from there. He is taking the best and making it applicable to ANY Quake1 experience. Q15 was abandoned almost FIVE years ago FWIW.

Combat+ is sublime. He knows the rhythm of original quake and is applying some rocking riffs to make game play fresh, more visceral and faster paced. The author is great at taking feedback and has breathed a new experience that feels updated. It isn't Quake as released, it isn't Quake 1.5, it is an experience to apply where you want it. I F*@&! love it.

This mod changes the balance of the game pretty much. In difficult maps you will quickly start axing monsters because there is no more ammo.

Mods should always include maps which it should be used for. You can not create a mod and say you can play all maps with it. That’s not true because maps are designed with specific gameplay mechanics in mind.
