Nice. I just have a few quips. I think that there should be a custom animation with the wrench so that it actually appears that you're torquing a few bolts, and not just playing whack-a-mole with advanced military equipment. Nothing too fancy, but something just like what's seen in Battlefield 2 or whatnot.

It would also be a good idea to build a full turret interior that you sit in when you use the cannon, to keep up with the idea of immersion and a constant first person perspective that's been persistent in Half Life.

This last one is just a pipe dream, most likely, but these situations would be a nice time to show off some awesome Source Fake DMM. Make the cannon seem even more powerful, and make the maps seem a lot less static.

we're still working on a custom anim for that!

also, it won't have a full turret interior, you're going to "pilot" the gun from a sort of control board behind it.

A few months ago, I predicted that Striders everywhere would collectively crap their pants due to this thing.

I take it back.

This thing looks to be so goddamn good at killing striders that they won't have the time to crap their pants.

Loving it!

Aside from the awesome Gauss cannon, I couldn't help but notice that those streets are looking really cool too. Much better (and not to mention more realistic) than City 17's constantly cramped, almost claustrophobic street maps.

It would be awesome if the level you used the gauss-2 on had high destructibility, so you could shoot a support column to bring a portion of a building down on a strider or group of enemies.

Surprised you coded the entire gun, I(and most) would of taken the easy route and scripted it in Hammer. And I would of liked a first person camera as well, it would keep the style of HL. But I can see many reasons for not making it first person.

Also, is it animated? I didn't notice any real moving parts during firing. (Excluding the pitch/yaw animation system)

Overall, great job. Looking forward to more.

it actually isn't an "easy route" and looks way worse. we did try doing it hammer, it's rubbish. plus it's easier to tweak it with a bunch of console cvars.

yeah, it's not animated. we're gonna add firing animations (rotating coils and what not) just now. after all, it's more important to get it working!

There's a heavily armed, highly-trained soldier standing next to a valuable piece of weaponry that would do well to improve your military. What do you do? Send in an interstellar space alien army to not capture it! Or kill the soldier!

Description

The man who modeled this beast was DOG-GY, based on his own concepts. It went through various stages of texturing, based on suggestions from fans on ModDB, our forums and even other forums like Facepunch, until it finally got to the actual looks of it. The particles were done by Ghor, who also worked with Ferdam to get the collision models, attachments, the actual model working with the code and the enter/exit points right.

Finally, it was coded by Chris528 who based the gun on the original HL2 jeep code. It took us two months to brainstorm ideas, model the gun, get the model in-game, get the particles done, and actually test it until we thought it was perfect for the gameplay. You can see early tests he did of the Gauss-2 on his YouTube channel: Youtube.com

Songs (respectively) by Schmoe and Chaz.
