The game takes place in the eve of the Seven Hour War. Fighting against blood shedding synths and frightening aliens, Adrian Shephard has to struggle his way with his fellow comrades from the Phoenix Command, with the main objective of stopping the construction of a Combine Citadel. In his journey he will find what has happened to the world, moments before the Seven Hour War.

All joking aside, this scene looks epic. The smoke looks really, really realistic, the city is incredibly detailed, and I wouldn't mind dying if I got to see this rift when I do.
So I threw Crysis 2 into the nearest Trashcan..

Well based on modern physics id have to say for 2 reasons. 1 its in the stratosphere part of the atmosphere & lower so its interacting (exciting) with the electrons in the atmosphere IE the static charges that pretty much make lightning. The other reason is that its pretty much a burst of unknown exotic radiative energy similar to that of a solar flare from a white dwarf sun. I'm betting they would be definitely cancer killer in the long run.
On another more relevant note you guys should add electrical discharges around the vortex to make it more dynamic looking. It would also make it look more like a portal storm instead of a swirling cloud.
