You know, this was a big effort to place sound zones with certain characteristics on the maps where appropriate. It's the only way to leverage EAX in STALKER ShoC.
FYI, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC supported EAX 3.0 out of the box - I'm guessing these guys are mainly expanding on and improving what was already there.
Amazing as it sounds, I ain't gonna buy a crap brand audio card for it. I bought a Creative once. It blew up. And they don't do anything that onboard sound can't. EAX is just screwing people over in software to pressure them into buying things they don't need.

:lol FYI the best way in getting to know something is to look at the logs. That's what you'll find in any log (if you have discrete Creative soundcard):

Personally never liked the loud gun **** sound. But still nice tunnel sound, even the talking mates make that tunnel sound + Realism.
