It really seems like I have to dump a mag full of 5.45x39 into these Bandits with my full size AK74, it feels like Vanilla SoC to me. In any case, how do you unpack the game files to check?

You're joking. You shoot into the air. Two-or three bullets from AK74 are enough. And don't shoot in burst mode.

I am playing on Master, but I thought that was supposed to make weapons more lethal all around.

I notice though, that with a VAL, they most humans go down quickly in single shot mode after just a few shots. They also react to bieng shot unlike with the AK74.

If it takes a full mag then chances are you are missing the target. The AK-74 isn't a sniper rifle; a lot of shots go off-center. For me it usually only takes ~5-6 AP rounds center-mass to drop someone. It can take a few more with the non-AP rounds; but definitely not a whole mag. Even fighting the Mercs with non-AP rounds, I was able to take out 4 or 5 with a single mag in CQB shooting center mass (I think I got one confirmed headshot). Range is also a factor, as damage drops off significantly at range

This really IS an issue with this mod that refuses to get acknowledged.. it's a fantastic all-round mod but I gave up on it and am waiting on Lost Alpha because the ballistics and gunplay in the mod are a freaking joke. On Master difficulty a bandit should go down with one bullet to the head even with the makarov, not be able to shrug off several AK hits to vital parts, and that's only a lowly bandit. There is either some weird calculation on where the bullets go (instead of where they should) or some added enemy sponginess or I don't know what, but I've played a million stalker mods and have honed my skills throughout the years well enough to know when I'm missing and when the game is missing for me or, even worse, bandits are Abraham Lincoln-ing it up and sucking up bullets with their skulls.

Headshots with rifles are still a one-shot-kill 95% of the time. The game does not model lungs/heart/artery hits, if that's what you're implying by "hits to vital parts". I've put 100's of hours into OGSE and I've never had a problem killing any NPC's with headshots (unless of course I missed). It usually only takes 4-5 rounds center-mass before they're incapacitated (depending on armor, of course).

Yes the ballistics/gunplay may not be 100% realistic; but then why are you playing a STALKER game if you're looking for realism? And if it's such a big issue, there's plenty of resources for you to use to modify it to your liking
