What happened with the Skull like head the Atlas originally had before Battletech games?
It's still there, but the top is made more of the glass material so you can actually see out of the cockpit. Since in MWLL cockpits are real and not fake (unlike the old games where it was all fake and not really used), several changes had to be done to some mechs to make it possible to actually see out of them.
Since in past games the cockpit for the Atlas was only this tiny little eye piece that had no practical purpose and realistically speaking wasn't something that would be ever used in battle other than to look cool, the atlas was made the way it is in MWLL. Trust me that with the old CBT design no one would ever want to play with the atlast due to not actually being able to see out of it except for this tiny area.
Why not just have a monitor on the inside and keep the skull look?
I think I saw it written somewhere that was how it operated.
Because that's a little bit out of the scope of the mod, and it's not possible for Crysis to have multiple working monitors in the same way HL2 can (if even at all... there's only been one guy able to replicate the effect and it was very sketchy and only could do a reflection).
It was just more practical from a design standpoint to have it be open at the top. Not only dos this play much better, but it also gives the player a good viewing space. You know what they say, "Form follows Function", and in this case function > having a metal a full metal skull for the cockpit.
i think that its a better idea to give the head a turning function, like a turret. the skull is just to good/scary/awesome to lose, and when i say this i think every other Mechwarrior fan agrees that the skull head must be incorporated somehow
(P.S. ShepherdOfRot im pretty sure the atlas was supposed to be some embodiment of fear/grim reaper than some heroic piece of art...)

For a lot of us hardcore Mechies out there, the loss of the iconic skull will be a big hit, however even if it lacks that skull, you can bet I would still trust my life to it.
How trying to make it look like a two way mirror. So you can see the skull from the outside but not from the inside by using a shader(dont know if thats the correct term for it) Just a thought if its even possible.

I prefer this head actually. The iconic skull was a bit too... Mercenary for my liking. Yeah. Like Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries. xD
Wow, the atlas lost weight around the waist! Age, it seems, has treated him well! lol...
I like the new head as well. It's slim, it's sexy (In my opinion). It makes it look like some god-sent warrior about to wreak justice and/or havok on all opposition... And that's normally what the Atlas does, eh?
Beautiful job on the Atlas, MWLL team, I am impressed once again.
I just want to say something,
How can the developers of Mech Warrior Online do the Atlas head properly and you guys cannot?
I mean, you just have to put the cockpit inside one of the EYE of the Atlas, that is how the guys at piranha games did it,
PUT THE COCKPIT IN ONE OF THE EYE! AND BRIG BACK THE SKULL!!
