but tell me... is it a true Depth of Field or is it just a gradual blur on the outer edges of the viewcone?

It's a true depth-based blur effect that changes dynamically based on your distance from the object you are looking at (i.e the object/surface your cursor is on). That being said, it's not perfect, but it is certainly not a simple overlay or anything. The effect is being calculated in real-time ;)

I personally don't care for depth of field at all. I like to look at things without having to aim at them, so when I'm not staring at the center of the screen, the graphics get ruined with smudge.

All that aside, this is quite nicely done. Bravo!

Lol, yes, the depth of field effect is very strong ONLY because the camera is focused on the tree at a very near distance. In normal circumstances is is much more subtle-looking
