Get small insight of hows the progress coming along on the Uplink remake.

Posted by on

Hi everyone, my name is The Comedian and I’m the level designer of Uplink - which was originally a demo for Half-Life, but is now an extra chapter in Guard Duty.
I will now give you guys some information about Uplink and some media as well.
When I joined Guard Duty, the team gave me the big task to remake uplink in the source engine. At first I was a bit surprised because I thought I would work on remaking Blue Shift. So I said to mr. sugar “well, no problem. I'll remake uplink and then afterwards I can start then with the real stuff like blue shift?”. He said "first work on uplink. We will talk later about other maps”. So for now I’m still working on uplink.

Please don’t underestimate this mission. This extra needs a lot of fresh models, textures, sounds, redesign, ideas,… (for the geeks I had 3 predecessors and they all failed).

Now I can give you some progress of the whole mission
Uplink part1: orange mapping is almost done
Uplink part2: starting with textures and models
Uplink part3: starting with the orange mapping
Uplink part4: orange mapping is done
Uplink part 6: starting orange mapping

Steps of a WIP (uplink2):

Some people will say, pffhuw dude, just start with part 1 and when it’s done make part 2 and so on. I can tell from experience that this can’t work when you don’t have the models and textures. Our 2D and 3D artists are doing a great job but they have to focus on content for the actual remake of Blue Shift. The second thing is that when I get a good idea for uplink I start building it. (I know it’s not the professional way but it works for me)

Some people send me messages telling me to stop with mapping because they think that I’m ruining the atmosphere of blue shift source. I’m the last person to say that I’m a perfect level designer. Because of these comments I now try to put all my free time into this project.

What? Ow yes the media update, well I won't show any screenshots of the uplink maps this time because they aren’t good enough to show.

No stop crying I got something for you. It’s a concept art of a combat scene from Killuh. Can you guess the place?

About the other media updates, it’s coming but give us some time.

It was fun to write this dev blog and I hope I can write some more in the future.

Do not forget about our YoutTube channel and Twitter, so you don't miss even small little tidbits. We are also still looking for talented people, so don't hesiate to apply!

And one last closing note. Support our project, vote for us in MOTY and help us to pass to the TOP 100. We appreciate every vote!

Excellent job, hopefully we'll be able to play this soon enough.

I remember at least 2 other failed Uplink remakes that never saw the light of day here on Moddb :(

Doing Uplink as separate project is actualy pretty hard. Even though it's short, it needs huge amount of textures, models and coding. Too much work for such a short "game", so I guess merge it with bigger project will turn out good and make it all easier :).

Keep your good work!

Take all the time you need, well, maybe try to be done sooner rather later, but soon must not be to soon... I will be patient...

Looks great. Good mapping.

Also, the concept art is of the Gargantua in the end of Uplink, but I'm pretty sure this is on the wrong side of the room.
