In "Get a Life" you embody Alexander Zemlinsky, a subway technician suffering from leukaemia.
Alex is not, unlike the protagonists in most games, an invincible super-soldier. But you wouldn't call him normal either, because there is something in his past that connects him with the events that are about to happen in the course of the story (we want to keep the suspense, so nothing more on that...). "Get a Life" will feature different environment settings presented in more than 24 maps, all of them connected to the scenario of the mod. GaL will offer about 11 hours of pure gameplay pleasure.

  • GaL will run on the latest version of the Source Engine, so that means you'll see HDR and the enhanced shadow system (as seen in HL2: Episode 1) in "Get a Life" as well
  • To give the player the best gaming experience possible, GaL will offer a custom HUD, an innovative healing system with several damage zones, drugs that will trigger a "bullet-time" effect, upgradeable weapons and enhanced enemy AI
  • About 11 hours of gameplay
  • 24 maps with varied environments
  • 61 characters
  • 13 weapons

The mod isn't bad actually. It may have some flaws here and there, horrid voice acting and moments that are complete ********, but it's a decent mod - one that's actually complete compared to many mods for Half-Life 2.

I didn't understand the story well, maybe if someone could clarify it for me? What I know *SPOILER* is that the main character has leukemia and his sister gave him the wrong medication that caused wide spread infection? I don't get why he woke up in the hospital bed and at the end he somehow journeys to some lab facility to kill someone who's him? I don't get it.

Legendary mod here. One of the few actual Half-Life 2 singleplayer mods that finished.

You know, I'm pretty sure I've never played this mod in it's entirety before, but there are pieces of it that are familiar. Especially the final boos fight, and one or two other parts. Makes me wonder if those might have been previously released separately.

The story aspect of this kind of falls by the wayside as you work your way further and further into the epic quest to reach the end. But it was still a fun journey.

Quibbles: The inability to have a flashlight working if you have a weapon in your hands is annoying, to say the least, given how many extremely dark areas you have to traverse.

Some of the fight sequences, especially the final boss fight, are over-the-top, stupidly difficult.

Why is it necessary for the same text message to be delivered to us three times, at three different computer work stations? This happened at least twice.

Frequent crashes that occur while using the health menu are a nuisance.

Some of the English voice acting is...not so good, hard to understand. But there are captions for that, so at least you don't miss out on any important info.

Notwithstanding the above concerns, this is still one of the best dozen or so HL2 mods out there. I highly recommend it.

1. Crashes very frequently when using the health menu.
2. No way to turn off the damn flashlight.

But I'm going to keep playing, because this is a damn fine mod in spite of the problems. Highly detailed maps, with a lot of 'throwaway' details that do not impact the story, but do enhance appearance and immersion. And this mod has a decent strong story going, at least so far.

And using an install wizard instead of leaving it to the user to figure out how to install a collection of files is much appreciated.

ENJOY the flashlight because later on you WON'T have one when you could use one...

How to not make a mod 101: make the FOV painfully zoomed in so you feel nausiated.

One of the best HL2 mods I have played to date. The gameplay is fun, never really getting tiring with the ever-changing enemies, combat environments and features which kept me interested every step of the way. The introduction of features like bullet time had me worried at first, but proved to be fun to use and balanced out. The level design is extraordinary, with constantly changing environments that ensure non-linear gameplay. The use of Hl2's physics engine also creates an enjoyable level of…
