One of the key features of the game is the tech progression system. It's going to be a true technology tree; with different ships made available through different tech; but also past tech is not discredited.
If one is lucky enough to find a world containing the data, one might just be able to extract enough of the archives of the Empire, Old Republic or other organisations to be able to reproduce some of their ships, and if you have other required tech, develop new adaptions.
Here we see the CR20 Troop carrier, refitted for service with the NR navy. She is vulnerable, not very fast and poorly armed, but she has been refit to serve as a cost-effective support vessel capable of repairing friendly ships in battle. This is but one variant you are capable of making of the bog standard vanilla CR20 with the right (this case low level) tech.
OF COURSE, she is very much an auxiliary ship; up to date repair ships are more effective and, with the right research, available but old ships are a very cost effective way of bolstering your forces in war, especially if your purse strings are tight.
She's armed only with 2 double barrelled flak cannons (literally double-barrelled, 2 shots then reload... Be aware I'm specific with my language), and is hardly a match for anything but a light or outdated fighter squadron.
