A deep dive into development history in celebration of Rise of the Triad Ludicrous Edition Demo.

Just recently, Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition Shareware was released, proving the remaster to be as good as advertised: modern controls, improved renderer, restored beta content which was presumed lost for years.

In celebration of this, we'll have a look at another early build of Extreme Chase, dated April 12, 2020.

The park is finished, but the big pit that was digged to repair the underground pipework isn't there yet. It was added later as a way to prevent the player from walking around the park and entering the graveyard early.

Build Apr12 2020: Part

Graveyard prototyping is started. The idea of how each grave should look is established: Triad members treat their fallen soldiers as heroes and on each grave they place a statue that reflects personality and feats of the deceased. Also established graveyard fences and entrance. No edits of terrain yet, but the table near the entrance is already placed where it will be in the final version.

Boss fight arena is in the very early stage. El Zee statue is not on its final place yet, it's just here because it's planned to be included. The graves placement form triangles, following the shape of the Triad emblem. Scaled up Triad emblems on the ground will assist such placement.

Build Apr12 2020: Castle Entrance

The big room the H.U.N.T. team appears in when they enter the castle is almost done. Development of the corridors has started. It is already decided to use pictures from Scream of the Triad on the walls. No Lion's Mane Volcano pictures yet (it didn't even exist back then! Yes, hard to imagine Lion's Mane Volcano not existing...).

Back then planned release date of Extreme Chase was May 2020, because "just need to make a couple more rooms in the castle, detail the graveyard, script the boss fight, make the final chase and that's it". It's middle of April, and it's getting more and more apparent how far from reality this plan is.

That's it for today. There's one more surviving build to look at in the future, and as always I encourage you to try completed version of Extreme Chase if you haven't already:
