Spectacular work Ducthman, keep it up, do you think that the next ship you design could be the resurgence class SD???

That's probably not going to happen, Warb null has an excellent model of it, you can download it from his onedrive, link on his moddb profile.

I mean, all these look really cool, but how does the engine handle this?

This is basically an extremely simple effect, it is simply the normal empire at war particle system used on a scale never done before. Honestly there's nothing special to it save nobody has done it before in this setting and with this scale. Attach a gigantic particle to every vertex on a flat plane far beneath the planet mesh, then set that particle to a low colour and let it stack to create a atmosphere effect when looked at from the sides, and completely disappear underneath the planet mesh when looking at the planet. Simple but effective.

TL;DR It's one of those really simple things once you get it, but seemingly complex if you don't know how it's set up. This is basically what I love to do in this game, using it in weird ways to create new effects. New Death star, Eclipse firing effect, this atmosphere, it's all relatively simple vanilla game stuff used in new ways. I live for these things.

How many more of these amazing planet textures can we expect to be gifted with? Will there also be new ones for i.e. volcanic or swamp or darker rocky worlds? Or another variant for urban planets besides Coruscant?

Description

Still going on, the Planet Project, a joint operation between Megabalta, Steiner, Farseer, and me, has severely increased the quality of planets over time. Here, on display the new planet textures by Steiner, which as you'll agree are absolutely wonderful. I want to quickly take this oppertunity to thank everyone for putting their effort and work into this, as it's been a spectacular improvement over the original Forces of Corruption style sphere planets, into what you see here now.
