What's the difference between the smaller and medium sized tanks? Is it the same just resized or are they actual different units?

Starting with T3, subfactions are available for research in the Armory to GDI only. The chooseables are: GDF (Global Defense Force), Steel Talons and Zone Command (ZCOM).

GDF is focused on defense and artillery.
ST on offensive and beefy units.
ZC on aerial superiority, mobile units and infantry.

For example in T3, GDF gets the Fortress Artillery Tower and the Airblast (Hover MLRS replacement). ST gets the Heavy Archon and a Wolverine MK.II (Wolverine MK.I replacemen) while ZC gets the Hover Archon, Zone Marine and Zone Raiders (Jumpjet).

TL:DR: Tanks on the side are a subfaction variant/replacement with different stats.

Subfactions are exclusive to GDI. This will make them quite interresting to play with or against.

Nod gets instead combat protocols (a small collection of upgrades/tech), it's a smaller variant of it but you can pick several protocols unlike the subfacton one.

Cabal will have general upgrades/tech to research. Examples are faster cyborgs or more armored ones, etc...those are not unit specific but affect most of his army.

Forgotten is much more adaptive. You just pick the units you want to get. But you can't get them all (and choosen ones are permanent), this allows you to suprise your enemy, he never knows what he will face.

Will the AI be able to use these things too?

AI in CD makes already use of this system.

The best part is that it's a non cheating one :)

It picks it's subfaction, protocols and researches tech.

AI will also have other preferences. Turtle AI will prefer something like GDF more than Steel Talons etc...
