It is mankind's most basic nature to destroy what he creates, to one day turn a season of peace into one of war. Badge of Blood will use Valve's Source engine from Half-Life 2 to tell a dramatic narrative of a bitter independence war fought between the corporate colonies of Mars and the major economic powers of Earth. In doing so, we are also adhering to the principles of realism, avoiding the many clichés of the genre. You won't see force fields, laser swords, or blasters here. We are going to great lengths to ground our science fiction in science fact, to tell a story of what can be; of what someday will be. What will the first war in space be like? What weapons will be used, and who will participate? How will it be fought? We aim to answer these questions as we continue to develop Badge of Blood the Half-Life 2 mod. To punctuate our dedication to the setting in which the First Person Shooter will be taking place, we will also be publishing a set of core rulebooks and...

Description

In the thin air of Mars long range, commercial
passenger flight just isn't practical or
economical; and given the hostile environment,
roads and highways between colonies for passenger
vehicles would be equally implausible. So how do
the Martians get around on a planet that is so
forbidding and difficult to traverse?

The answer is the now ubiquitous MagLev: trains
that use the principles of Magnetic repulsion and
attraction to speed down lengths of track that are
hundreds of kilometers long at hundreds of
kilometers an hour, all while floating only inches
above the track's surface.

The Martian MagLev network serves the role of
plane, train, and automobile in Martian Society.
These mammoth trains, far larger than their
counterparts on Earth, are roughly the size of
Jumbo Jets, carrying hundreds (sometimes
thousands) of passengers and many tons of freight
between colonial stations.

MagLev tracks themselves serve a dual purpose:
Built into each section of is a pipeline that
carries power, air, and water between colonies.
The track's many power stations are tapped to
heat these lines, allowing the water to flow down
the pipeline without freezing, and the breathable
air to reach its destination at acceptable
temperatures.

In the modern Martian economy, it is almost
impossible for a colony to flourish successfully
without a dedicated MagLev line to provide the
lifeblood of commerce and mass transportation...
and this fact is not lost on the Body Politik, who
is scrambling to defend these lifelines from
disruption by the Loyalist Insurgency.
