SR-2M Veresk (Russian: Heather) is a submachine gun/machine pistol chambered in 9x21mm Gyurza cartridge, which is more powerful than comparable 9x19mm Parabellum round. SR-2 was developed in late 1990s by TsNIITochMash (famous for AS and VSS rifles) on request of Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). It was meant to be a compact, concealable personal defense weapon that would be able to penetrate all kinds of soft body armor, which stopped standard 9x19mm Para and even 7.62x25mm TT rounds - similarly to western constructions like P90 or MP7. Mechanically, SR-2M is a pretty unique weapon, since unlike other submachine guns it is gas operated - it's action is based on SR-3M Vikhr assault rifle, but is said to be relatively reliable. Overally, SR-2M is a nice and effective weapon, but is less universal than comparable submachine guns chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum.
