During the last Great War, Soviet scientists designed and proposed numerous experimental weapons. Proposals included the revival of giant zepplins to terrorize enemies and improve troop morale. Carrying an almost unlimited supply of free-fall bombs, these airships would have been ideal for carpet bombing operations.
However due to budget concerns and internal conflicts, development of Hind attack helicopters were prioritized instead. The Chinese would eventually acquire the blueprints for these prototype designs and the Black Whirlwind programme was born. Black Whirlwind (Hei Xuanfeng, 黑旋风) is the nickname of Li Kui a fictional character in the Water Margin, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature.
The Whirlwind is a T4 PRA armored airship designed to destroy large groups of ground armor or aircraft. In medium to close range engagements, the Whirlwind bombards air and ground-based targets with its dual 130mm cannons. Large structures and slow moving armor are especially vulnerable as they’re likely to take the full brunt of the blast wave.
The latest Whirlwind models are currently field-testing long-ranged surface to surface cruise missiles. This gives the Whirlwind a first strike capability which is useful for softening up enemy ground forces. It should be noted that this weapon has a long reload time and is not fired if a Whirlwind can engage the target with its cannons.
Whilst durable, the Whirlwind is expensive to construct and slow moving. The Whirlwind should not be exposed to prolonged anti-aircraft fire from defensive turrets, advanced anti-air weapons and fighter jets.
