Description

The Marklin-class light cruiser USS Hildegard, on patrol along the border, is ambushed by a Klingon raider - taking a devastating volley of torpedo fire to her port side.

The Federation had grown rapidly during the early 23rd Century, much to the chagrin of the Klingons. As Federation colonies began springing up in closer proximity to Klingon space, the High Council became increasingly irate. The fact that the Klingons already did not trust the Federation, and humans in particular, did not help matters as Federation diplomats urged for a continued peace.

Ultimately, however, the High Council had indulged the Federation enough. Those worlds belonged to the Empire by right! Proclaiming that, "If words were water, the humans would drown us all!", the High Council expelled all Federation diplomats from the Empire, and gathered the Empire's forces to take what the Federation had usurped.

The Federation's border defences were easily swept aside. The Klingons' belief in their martial superiority was well founded - Starfleet's idealistic focus on exploration at the expense of tactical prowess left the Federation at a distinct disadvantage against the Klingon fleet.

Convinced of Starfleet's weakness, many Klingon commanders in disgust began employing tactics deemed disrespectful by Klingon warrior tradition - ambushing and toying with Starfleet vessels, engaging in deadly games of cat and mouse in pursuit of a challenge. This behaviour would become a trait of the first half of what would become known as the Four Years War.

In their arrogance, however, the Klingons overlooked an important detail - Starfleet learned from every engagement, and every moment the Klingons spent seeking glory, the Federation used to improve its ships, equipment and tactics.
