Couldn't agree more, I'm always surprised how solid, effective and immersive the Sins-engine still is after all these years!

Description

USS Leonov battles a Klingon assault force trying to flank Starfleet's position in the Celes system.

By mid 2244 the war had ground to a stalemate. The momentum granted to Starfleet by the victory at Axanar had allowed them to retake more than half of their lost territory, but in the face of mounting Klingon forces and heavily entrenched positions, the advance finally came to a halt. Even forces spearheaded by the potent Ares-class cruisers failed to make significant headway before being pushed back.

The Klingons faced the same frustration. Initial projections had estimated that the Federation would have fractured and the war been won nearly a year earlier. Instead Klingon forces were bogged down well short of victory, caught in an infuriating deadlock with Starfleet forces. Big pushes were inevitably pushed back, and attempts to outflank Federation poisitons were frustrated by Starfleet ships' superior speed. Klingon losses were mounting, and although to die in battle was eminently honourable, the lack of progress seemed to cheapen the sacrifice.

This was all set to change, however. The prototype for the Klingons' newest weapon, the D-7 battlecruiser, had returned successfully from a shakedown mission behind enemy lines, and had even obliterated a Federation starship with ease. Satisfied that the D-7 was now the most powerful warship in the Quadrant, the Empire hastened the new battleship's production for immediate deployment. The shame of Axanar would be avenged, and the Federation would tremble before the Empire's mighty fleet once more.

Meanwhile, Starfleet had recovered the USS Yorktown's log buoy. Though damaged and incomplete, the Yorktown's sensor logs made it clear that the Klingons were on the verge of deploying a deadly new weapon. Although Starfleet did its best to prepare for the coming onslaught, it was clear that the development of Starfleet's own next-generation heavy cruisers would have to be prioritised.
