Ships' Log: USS Constitution: Admiral William Jefferies commanding;

We've been in Yiridia for a week now and no new offensive. Normally I'd be happy about this, but at this point I'm more concerned when I don't see Klingons than when I do. In the meantime, I've had the fleet running attack drills to keep them sharp. The Andorian crews seem to be enjoying it at least.

But there's a change in the winds. A report has crossed my desk recently. This officer, this Karga could mean a lot of trouble. As the commander of their first D-7, he's bound to be more experienced that the last commander I've encountered. Judging by how effective the first D-7 sorties have been, he's certainly capable. That makes him exceedingly dangerous.

And now he's in command of a whole Klingon fleet somewhere in the Mempa sector. This offensive will be bigger than I thought and the outcome of the war may hang on what happens in the coming days. We know where they are, the question becomes: Where are they going?

Description

USS Constitution leads a Federation fleet in the Yridia system, preparing for the Klingons' inevitable offensive.

Contact with Klingon forces had been sporadic for over a month. What contact had been made had been comparatively disorganised and ineffective, apparently confirming reports that the Empire's leadership was paralysed by infighting brought on by frustration with the war. With the Imperial hierarchy distracted, Starfleet used the opportunity to retake several positions left open by the Klingons - setting out from Celes and securing Barolia and the Rho Puppis star system. The bulk of Starfeet's strength, however, remained split between Regulus, where Starfleet had established a field headquarters, and the nearby Yridia, located at the center of the line.

Admiral Jefferies had taken direct command of Starfleet's forces in the warzone from aboard the USS Constitution. A shrewd strategist, Jefferies knew that the Empire's lack of focus would not last forever - once the Empire's leadership sorted their issues out, a renewed offensive was inevitable. With that in mind, Starfleet's positions all along the line were reinforced as the Federation readied its defences.

Admiral Jefferies' suspicions were confirmed when Federation agents within the Empire reported that an upheaval of sorts had occured within the Great Hall on Qo'nos. It appeared that an influential Klingon officer had made a show of killing an incompetent Imperial fleet commander before the High Council themselves, and had rallied the Empire's political and military leaders to unite once more. This officer, Karga, commanded the IKS Gr'oth, the very D-7 that had destroyed the USS Ares, and single-handedly acted as the Empire's vanguard in their assault on Yridia. His influence within the Imperial fleet was clearly well earned.

These same agents also reported that Karga was now at the heart of a Klingon fleet gathering somewhere in the Mempa sector. The Klingons were preparing to strike back. Hard.
