Red Mesa 2

Mod review

Let's just summarize right from the start: If you haven't played this, please don't. Save your brain cells, you might need them later.

I don't see how you could possibly make a sequel to Red Mesa, it was just that bad. It's mostly the same as the first one, but it got worse. Maps don't even make sense, one loading screen in particular went from a large concrete building to something that I seem to remember as vaguely aquatic-looking. Headcrabs and zombies have new sound, those of a foreign 11-year-old saying random things in his native language.

Overall: Inconceivably bad. 0/10. (If that were possible).

Holy crap. I find it extremely difficult to even begin to believe how such a terrible junkpile could possibly have been created. I mostly don't expect too highly of Half-Life 1 mods, but even this surprises me.

First off, every texture in this entire... thing disturbs me. The scientist has a face that doesn't look pleasant at any angle, his entire jaw is destroyed every time he opens his mouth and it just looks like a terrible mask. The guards are like those mannequins used to train doctors. The "vortigaunts" are soldiers, recoloured to vaguely resemble turds. The soldiers are just bad. Weapon textures are actually good, but terrifyingly bad hands detract.

The models. Basically the same as in HL1, though the custom pistol/SMG are cool. Hands are like corpses left alone for a year or two.

Maps aren't even worth describing. The animations are okayish on the weapons, but totally messed up. Drawing the pistol "reloads" it. Knife uses literally everything for the swing. Firing the 357 also "reloads" it and then reloading it "fires" it.

Overall? Disgraceful. 1/10.

Wow, ok, where do I begin? First thing I noticed when I started a new game was just how generally beyond stunning these graphics are. All the effects are great and the sounds/music are great.
That said, there were some bad weapon sounds and animations, but that's mainly just a small complaint, specifically the 9mm weapons. Pistol animations were choppy and the SMG sounds could be a bit better. Satisfying revolver (which you get surprisingly earlier) and crossbow accounted for the problems though. Voice acting is great as well, though Eli's was honestly horrible. A lot of people criticised the HECU's over-the-top acting and this is true, but I guess I just like them anyway. The cutting of the majority of On A Rail was welcome to me because of how annoying that chapter was, the taste of Xen in Questionable Ethics was really exciting and the ending in Lambda Core was really cool and interestingly trippy. Now the music. The soundtrack is great beyond words but sometimes sounds completely out place, like in Surface Tension's tripmine puzzle where heavy rock sounds stupid. What is bad gets redeemed by great things in its place, justifying my 10/10 rating. Let's hope it's not too long until Xen, hey?

Sweet Half-Life

Mod review

Somehow, this mod just doesn't click with me. I simply can't get a feel for it. Also, as a bit of constructive criticism, I think the voice acting needs work; It's recorded on a pretty static-y microphone and it also lacks actual enthusiasm (I guess?) for lack of a better word.
