OpenHV

Mod review

Great idea. Interesting mechanics. Good looks. Decent sound.

I survived about 2 minutes against AI, I barely had time to understand how it works. Simply put: I will not play it.

I hope more people will try it. I guess against a human opponent or a more forgiving AI it might be fun.

Extended Native : Calradia's Borderlands

Mod review may contain spoilers

Excellent Mod.
One of the best mods in Calradia, I have played so far. It adds to Vanilla almost seemlessly. You barely feel a difference between the Vanilla content and that, which was added with the mod. And if you feel it, mostly for the better. It is fun to play, supports several different playstyles and has only very few bugs (as far as I can say after roughly 15 hours of playing).

To give a rough description with my own word.
This mod adds 5 new factions to the original factions. Like the old ones, each of the new ones have their distinct style and strenght on the battlefield.
Also, this mod adds a bunch of useful features (enlist in another army, plan your commands ahead of battle, several more unique characters, ...).

The only downside for me were several details with some of the new factions.
First of all, I find that they all have significate (and unbalanced) advantages compared to the old factions. In short: the old factions now all share several more borders, while the new border factions have "their back secure". That is not fair, the new factions should have at least be smaller or weaker in other respect.
Second: while I find the eastern factions very unique (resembling India or China/Japan), I have trouble in various degrees with the others. Ok, the Sudestrians have firearms, that is special. But the new northern faction resembles too much the Nords.

Escape: Yavin IV

Mod review

Simply amazing. This is not only the best Jedi Academy Mod I have ever tried, it is also very good. It has at least the quality of the vanilla levels of the single player campaign. It is very difficult und you have fight for every inch (sometimes even literary, it is very much close combat sabre fighting involved).

I see that the last review is some years past. Why?
This game is still great! Try it!

It even works seamlessly with the STEAM Version.

Jedi Outcast - Academy

Mod review

Maybe it is good, maybe not. You never know, if it does not work.

Problem:
This is not simply a mod for "Jedi Academy" but also for "Jedi Outcast" - you need both games to run it. So, if you only have JA, it will not run.

I see the logic, but I find it really annoying that this fact is only shared within the README file and not in the Mods description here.

SerenityJediEngine 2025

Mod review

Very difficult. The mod is so full with good ideas and bad implementation.

So, I simply did not try it for more than 10 minutes before I just give up. Not because of the bad content, but it was just buggy and strange.

Maybe it would be a good idea to split this mod in what? 2 or 3 mods and keep each of them simple and bug-free.

KOTOR

Mod review

Just the original game with some different enemies - so I was not impressed at the beginning.

But is it just my imagination or are the enemies really MUCH more aggressive. A good bit more difficult than vanilla, I would say. Anyway, it feels good to play Single-Player with new enemies and new skins for main characters.

So, in the end I rate it with a solid 7.

Installation is easy.
No bugs so far.
Nice alternative to vanilla.

UFO: Afterlight

Game review may contain spoilers

This game is the last part of a series of 3 games (Ufo: Aftermath, Aftershock, Afterlight). This one is probably the most mature of the three. They are definitely all worth a look.

In this game, you have to manage the human settlement on mars: train your soldiers/technicians/scientists, succeed in dangerous tactical missions, extend your base, fight off intrusions, colonize the planet, explore the technologies of four different races and build new equipment and weapons. Resources (both human and material) are scarce - so to be efficient, you have to manage a lot. All this is surrounded by a shallow but reasonable story with about 20 human characters, each with a tiny background story and their own voice output. Packaged in cute 3D graphics and a comprehensible user interface.

In vanilla, the game suffers from serious problems. The general balancing is not right. Example: after a while you get spammed with extremely repetetive tactical missions against the 'beastmen' race. Another example: The difficulty not only rises with your own technical development, but also with time, so if you are not very quick, you get overpowered by elite enemies in every mission.

So, in vanilla I would give this game a rating of 5 at most.

However, several mods were created which fixed the game!!
So, with a bit of modding, I enjoyed this game very much.

BannerPage

Mod review

A great mod. One of my favorites, only topped by "Prophecy of Pendor" and "Gekokujo".

It extends and improves vanilla game greatly and still feels like the original game.

On the downside - it crashed way too many times. That is sad.

Diversica

Mod review

This is certainly on of the best mods for Civ4BtS I know.

Like others have pointed out, it adds real value to the basic game without changing too much. It plays almost like vanilla with some extra units, some extra civs, some extra UI elements and so on.

Ok - why the only 6/10 ???
Because it is full of minor errors. This mod is actually a compilation of smaller mods. And these different mods sometimes are not 100% compatible with each other. It does not reduce the fun to play this mod, but it is annoying of you look real close.
