"Steam, Tracks, Trouble & Riddles" is as original and intelligent a Half-life 2 mod as I have ever played.

The first time I.....*ahem*......'tried' to play this mod years ago, I gave up on it very soon after starting it -- not being able to figure out how to assemble the make-shift railroad cart -which was required at the very beginning of the mod...

I recently tried this mod again, last night, and was much more successful...and somehow....very miraculously....managed to finish this mod without resorting to, say, any youtube 'walkthroughs,' etc.

The mod is exceptionally difficult: The setting seems to be a "steam-punkish" post WWII Germany that is 'quasi-modern.' The graphics are unique and very high quality and reminisce of Germany -me-thinks.

The premise of the mod is 'puzzle-solving' and requires extreme patience, 'fiddling around,' thinking and brainstorming.

Because of the overt difficulty level of this mod, I believe that "7" out of "10" is a fair rating. It is worthwhile to complete the mod, but for me it was aggravating enough that it was only 'barely' worth playing it all the way through. I have to give this mod at least a "7" because of how intelligent and well put together it was...

When attempting to start the game after selecting map, dinosaur, and weapon, the following error message appeared:

"failed to create the d3d9 device! invalid call!"

I have Windows 10 and my desktop resolution is 1920x1080.
The in-game resolution that I selected was 1280x1080 -- which is the same resolution I select for all Carnivores mods. Never have I gotten this error message in any other Carnivores mod I have tried to play. My graphics driver is up to date.

Your mod seems like it is very high quality. However, I wish that Carnivores mod creators had the expertise to include 1920x1080 resolution capabilities within their mods.

This Siberian Expeditions mod looks great.

My only qualm is that pretty much no creator of any Carnivores mod has either tried -- or been able to make a full widescreen mod.

Carnivores mods would be nearly perfect -way more awesome- if they included 1920x1080 resolution capabilities.

My laptop has the latest version of Windows 10 and my desktop resolution is full HD: 1920x1080 widescreen resolution.

I have spent hours "googling" and researching any and all Carnivores games and mods (Carnivores, Carnivores 2, Carnivores: Ice Age, etc.) attempting to find "widescreen fixes" for full widescreen capabilities. All searches have failed.

I do have the DGVoodoo graphics wrapper and have attempted to use this wrapper on all Carnivores mods I own, to get 1920x1080 widescreen resolution, without success.

I thank you for creating this mod and for the files. However, I wish that you could've made this mod with full widescreen capabilities for modern PCs. Do you, yourself, know of any widescreen fixes for your mod?

Have you attempted to make this mod capable of higher widescreen resolutions such as 1920x1080 for modern PCs?

There is now one exception: Your mod is the first -- and still the only mod -- in which I am able to run your game in 1920x1080 resolution. Why is it that you are the only one who's figured out how to solve this dilemma? Why haven't other creators of Carnivores mods -OTHER THAN YOU- been able to figure out how to incorporate full widescreen capabilities into their mods?

I can't get this patch working on my Windows 10 system. I want Carnivores to have my same desktop max resolution of 1920x1080.

When I press the tilde (`) key in the main menu, nothing happens. When I press the same key while playing the game as I am hunting, the game simply freezes/pauses. Pressing the tilde key again, unfreezes the game.

I have yet to find a work-around to get Carnivores 2 running in widescreen resolution...

Any suggestions as to why I can't get this mod working or how to fix this error?

I recently played this mod. It's a nice mod -- the mansion is extremely large, TOO large. There is a lot of detail and MANY rooms but lots of the mansion hallways are also too repetitive. I played this mod on 'expert' difficulty level. As I always have been, I was 'thorough to a fault': I searched every nook and cranny of the mansion -upstairs, downstairs, cellars, etc. etc.

After looking everywhere, I was unable to find the final special loot item nor was I able to quite procure the "90%" of the loot required on expert difficulty level; hence, after hours and hours playing this map, I was ultimately unsuccessful and could not complete the mod -- hence disappointingly, this mod is not a 'keeper' for me...

Re-synthesizer - - 141 comments @ Half-Life 2: What Remains

This is a great, great user-made mod for HL2 -easily one of my favorite HL2 user-made mods and one of the best.

Alyx accompanies Gordon throughout the mod, her animation and abilities are fluid and superb -she is able to crouch, run, jump, climb, descend, etc. more adeptly than she ever was in any of the 'OFFICIAL' HL2 games or sequels, amazingly.

This is a very, very well-done and long mod; some of the puzzles are very difficult to figure out and there are script errors here and there which required me to load a saved game and then try the same thing over in order for a door or something else to open which didn't the first time around.

The environments are quite varied and the graphics are very good. There is a lot of exploring; sometimes the battles with the combine 'bulls' are on the difficult side but for the most part the combat difficulty level is just right.

I rate this superb mod a 9/10.

I followed your installation instructions exactly:

"Install your Mod:

Make a Shortcut:
"D:\Steam1\SteamApps\sourcemods\Half-Life 2 Scientist Story\hl2.exe" -game hl2ss

When I click on the HL2 shortcut (with the -game hl2ss added) I get a blank screen, then a windows 10 error sound plays, then it returns to the desktop. What am I doing wrong?

Re-synthesizer - - 141 comments @ Amalgam

Amalgam is one of the better and lengthier HL2 mods I have played. There are a diverse array of environments (indoors and outdoors - including a somewhat lengthy "Citadel" type environment). The pacing is somewhat uneven: There are long 'exploratory' stretches and stretches of intense action. For the most part, difficulty level in terms of fighting 'combine bulls' is just right, though a few parts it is overtly difficult without a 'God cheat.'

There was one aggravating part of this mod that necessitated a youtube walkthrough cheat: About halfway through the mod, there is a silo door that requires hitting buttons "1, 2, and 3" in order to be activated so that the silo door can be opened. After trying this several times and 'resetting' the power, the door still wouldn't open. I then resorted to the youtube walkthrough of this mod and discovered that the correct sequence of numbers (to open the silo door) is "2,3,1." Without this youtube walkthrough, I never would have learned this: There is nothing in the instructions during the gameplay that would indicate that a specific and correct 'numeral sequence' needs to be entered in order to open the Silo door.

All things I consider "Amalgam" to be a good -but not great- user-made HL2 mod. I rate it a 7/10.

I used to own this game back in the early 2000s: It is an awesome game; very unique -- as far as I know a similar type of game has never come out since. Are there any mods, patches, or means to bring Descent 3 up to date and make it compatible with Windows 10? Also are there any mods, patches or means to give it a widescreen resolution of 1366x768?

So, *******....or shall I say "****".....or is it "Richard," instead -- why would 'no one care about my reviews': Their much more informative and intelligent than yours or anyone else's. Why would you be angered or offended by a very detailed and informative review? Is it because you, yourself are too stupid to write detailed reviews and are offended by intelligence? So why would anyone care about YOUR reviews...."****?" (I mean "Richard").

So I'm somehow 'at fault' if I have problems with a mod? It's MY fault and my review CANNOT POSSIBLY BE ACCURATE?

If you've noticed, *******, MANY reviewers on Steam ALSO give this mod a thumbs down and don't recommend this mod. Why aren't you chiding THEM as well as ME for giving a negative review of Wilson Chronicles? Isn't it 'free speech' to be allowed to 'vent' and 'bitch' about a mod if that mod is crappy, buggy and worthless - STUPID?

Update: I tried out this mod again for the first time in nearly a year: The FIRST time I played this mod, I downloaded it from modbb with very poor results -- in every conceivable way it was uber-buggy and unplayable; there were no "NPCs" and I was completely alone and also no doors or switches were 'openable' (hence a "noclip" cheat was required to go about anywhere).

THIS time I downloaded the mod directly from Steam. When I started "Wilson Chronicles," for the first time THIS time around -- the game crashed or shall I say 'froze up' and I had to manually shut down my laptop and restart it. I tried starting a brand new game of "Wilson Chronicles" once again after my laptop was ready -- and was able to successfully start a new game...however then I realized that my 'keyboard mappings' were not being saved: I had to 'remap' my some of my preferred keyboard actions ("shoot" = left mouse button -- toggle weapon up = "mouse wheel scroll up," etc.) over and over again -- but the mod would not save these mappings and kept reverting back to the 'default' mappings. I have not had this kind of issue, EVER, in any other HL2 mod I have played.

After this, I decided not to progress any further and I simply and very quickly uninstalled this buggy mod. Unless the creators FINISH "Wilson Chronicles" and/or patch up and remedy all of the many 'bugs,' I doubt I will ever attempt to play it again...

Re-synthesizer - - 141 comments @ Logistique

Update: I very recently tried this mod AGAIN, and this time around I downloaded it directly from Steam. Some of the glitches that I had experienced the FIRST time I played this mod after I had downloaded it directly from this website ("modbb"), seemed to have been resolved via the Steam download of this game; however once again in the beginning portions of this game, I found it impossible to bypass certain sections without using the 'noclip' cheat.

Once again THIS time around -the same as the FIRST time- for me the combat aspect ruins this mod: It's bad enough not having the 'sprint' capacity (to run very fast) enabled in this mod, but it made all the difference in the world not having any kind of 'ironsights' or more specifically 'crosshairs' to be able to accurately shoot combine 'bulls.' Had this mod enabled 'crosshairs,' Logistique may have ended up being very good; as it is -- it just isn't possible to avoid being killed, and probably at a very high rate at that -even with many weapons (including automatic weapons) in one's arsenal.

If the creator of Logistique was to create a patch to be able allow one to 'sprint,' but more importantly with weapons 'crosshairs' enabled....I would be willing to give this mod another try in the future. As it is, I currently rate this mod -even though I did not get far into it- perhaps a 5/10...

"Experimental Fuel" is not a TERRIBLE map......however the problem with it is that it IS 'terribly-SHORT.' It probably didn't require the brain of a 'baboon' to make this map.....but it likely did require the brain of an 'orangutan.'

Fueling and launching the rocket wasn't exactly......*ahem*.......'rocket science'..........as much as 'jet science.' For what it's worth, I rate this map a 3/10.

Re-synthesizer - - 141 comments @ Drainage

For some reason, off the bat when starting this map, I didn't think that it would turn out to be much of a map. "Drainage" is a fairly nice and diverse map, and the playing time isn't too short either.

The difficulty level is somewhat on the easier side...however the combat and difficulty increases the further one progresses. You start out mostly facing zombies and headcrabs, etc. but later on face a few slews of 'combine bulls.'

Areas of this map are very, very large -- almost 'too' large at times....but I don't mind that, even if it seems that there is a lot of 'empty unused space.' Many textures and ambient lighting are a little too dark, and some textures are too low quality with low polygon counts, however other textures are good quality.

"Drainage" is a nice entry-level 'exploratory' map and I rate it a 6.5/10.
