This depends on the mod. I've downloaded "Hexen HQ Sounds" and you can just copy the PK3 into the kmod subfolder and start the game.

Most mods have code specific to GZD (or some other engine), so they probably would not work out of the box. Depending on what exactly is included, it might be a few minutes' or many hours' of effort to make the compatible.

It's for the original Vavoom source port by Janis Legzdinsh. We are bundling 1.34 which is not a fork, it's a rollup of all the changes committed to the master branch since 1.33.

If you get an error message on startup saying “Game mode indeterminate”, this means the game couldn’t find a valid Hexen.wad in the directory where Vavoom.exe resides. You can also use the included setup utility (setup.bat/setup.sh) to specify a location outside of the Scattered Evil installation directory.

If you mean the "manual" link in readme.html, it points to the file "manual.pdf" in the subfolder "documentation". Your browser's settings might block this link, in which case you can navigate to the folder in Windows Explorer and open the file manually.

The manual is also available online at Koraxheritage.com

Sounds like you didn't even read the second half of the sentence... moving to GZD would mean cutting half the gameplay features.

Because it would mean rewriting the code from scratch just to cut half the features.

As the very first Hexen mod to come out, KMOD probably did inspire others. It might've even made some authors realize just how much the opening of the Hexen source code can mean.

At a glance it looks like technically, ZDL might be able to specify Vavoom as the source port, Hexen as IWAD, load all the PK3 files from the kmod subfolder and then add all the command line arguments from KMOD.bat, but even if it would work, I'm not sure what you would gain by doing this.

Somewhat belated reply, but as of Korax Mod 5.1 the damage of Ettin Commanders was significantly reduced.

When you say "I'm sure it a fantastic mod", does that mean you haven't actually tried it?

The actor animation definitions are completely different, compare e.g. the SE 2.1 version of the afrits ( Sourceforge.net ) to the SE 1.9 version ( Sourceforge.net ).

Sounds like you used a manual roll at character setup, which can make you end up with very low strength values (if you use the default roll instead, you'll start with 8 strength points).

That said, it'd be technically possible to have a weaker ettin subtype specifically for Winnowing Hall. Will think about it for the next release.

Regarding screen filtering effects, which one(s) specifically would you want to have an off switch?

If you mean the monster and NPC models, you can still download Scattered Evil 1.9 or earlier. If you mean all 3D models, you'll have to go back to the first beta release in 2012, available on SourceForge (it does have a few 3D models, but the vast majority of assets are sprites).

I've found the "issue" with the Spirits Within messages:

1. If you don't have enough Faith, it says so (this is correct).

2. If you have enough Faith, it checks your player level and your charisma and sets a maximum power for the spell based on those.

3. If there are more corpses within range than the maximum power of the spell, it'll say "spirits within failed" but still cast it, activating some of the corpses and not deducting Faith

4. If there are fewer (incl. zero) corpses within range than the maximum power of the spell, it'll say "spirits within activated" and deduct the Faith cost, regardless of whether any corpses have been popped.

I'll improve the gameplay logic and messaging of this for KMOD 5.1.

If you check out the contents of kmod5maps.pk3, you'll see that every original Hexen single player map is included, albeit every one has been modified a bit (monster and item placements, texture alignments, some architectural fixes). The same would have to be done to the Deathkings maps, which would in turn make it unnecessary to have the Deathkings original wad file.

KMOD5 relies on modified maps. While this is not an issue with the original Hexen maps (due to all the sound and graphics data, you still need the original game IWAD to run KMOD5), in the case of DeathKings it would mean not needing the commercial PWAD any more.

There are min and max values for each attribute. The total is fixed when including HP and Rage/Faith/Magic.

As to whether it makes sense to roll your own numbers, it depends a lot on whether your playstyle benefits from a certain ability. It's important though that you know what you are doing, as otherwise you might severely gimp your character (e.g. a fighter that can't use berserk before hitting level 3, a mage that will still be below 20 HP by level 4, etc.).

Why is it called Hexen III? That would imply it's an official sequel from Raven Software.

You'll have to talk to the Delta Touch developers since they decide which source ports are included in their app and they haven't included Vavoom this far.

You made the right decision: just play the difficulty setting that feels comfortable, no matter what it's called.

Some math regarding those Magma Serpents: if all three of the fireballs of a Magma Serpent attack hit you, they cause 240 points of unmitigated Fire damage. This is reduced by 20 percent if you picked an armor in camp that has no fire resistance, and by 80 percent if you picked the fire resistance armor. Fire is the most common damage type for which there is a resistance available, so when in doubt, ALWAYS PICK FIRE! :) In that case, a full hit would be 48 damage, which should be nowhere near lethal by that point.

Porting to GZDoom would mean cutting half the unique features, starting with the monster AI which is at the core of the Korax Mod 5 experience (try playing vanilla Hexen after KMOD5 and you'll surely see what I mean).

Thanks for the feedback!

I'll investigate the Spirits Within message issue.

The sidekicks are not dumb, they just don't care. ;) Make sure to avoid their line of fire, at which point you'll see you can just let them take care of the area they patrol.

Afrit Leaders don't regenerate health, they just stop taking damage for a short time.

As for mists, in many places you should be able to jump over them or edge out of the way. Monsters take damage from the mists too, which you can use to your advantage (especially toxic mists, which stunlock some enemies).
