I find that zero texture filtering helps the looks of Thief's original vanilla's, Thief 2 really doesn't look very nice in Newdark's 32 bit mode.

Are you using the CD version of TG? Regardless of whether you are on Windows or Linux, you should run the autorun/setup with compatibility mode set to Windows 98 and then install the game to a non-protected folder with easy access, such as C:/Games or /home/<user>/

Like nbohr1more said, it's a matter of taste. Many fans (myself included) favor the darker and surreal direction of The Dark Project over the Metal Age. Opting for TDP also seamlessly incorporates a greater variety of supernatural elements while staying true to the lore.
