These beasties are the "Centroids" from the hipnotic mission pack: "Scourge of Armagon".
I enhanced them...a bit. The source file is scourge.qc, so I call them Scourge.
They are one of the most interesting quake monsters because of the AI enhancement seen here. The red box is their hit box - the solid area. The purple is the "dodge" trigger.
They keep the trigger in front of them.
If a laser, missile or nail hits the trigger they attempt a dodge right or left.
A dodge that is often effective. Meanwhile they spit a ton of nails at you. Especially my enhanced versions.
The best strategies are lightning, super shotgun, or un-dodgable splash damage.
