The 2022 Mod of the Year awards have officially begun! This event is a celebration of the tireless dedication of the mod community, and aims to highlight the incredible work that has been produced by them throughout the year.
Decades Of Modding Live In You
2022 marked a momentous year for ModDB - the 20th anniversary of the site's operation. Over the last two decades, tens of thousands of mods have been released onto ModDB and some of the heaviest hitters have become industry legends, sealed within the history of ModDB itself. We ran a special event in the summer to celebrate these heavy hitters, and you, the site audience, chose the biggest, the brightest, and favourite mods of the last twenty years. Last year also marked our 20th anniversary of Mod of the Year itself!
However, the time has come to expand the net once again for the 21st iteration of the awards. Now's the time for all mods across all games to battle it out and decide who will be the newest legend to join the ranks as we head into a year that looks bright for mod creators everywhere!
Phase 1: Nominations Begin
From now, over the next 10 days, voting will be open for every mod on the site. Simply visit that mod's mod profile to find the voting booth, and click “vote now” to vote for that particular mod if you think it's worthy of making into the final Top 100.
Phase 2: The Top 100
The day after voting closes, on December 11, the Top 100 mods will be unveiled, calculated from those user votes over the first 10 days of voting. A new round of voting will then begin, with users voting over the another 10 days to determine which of those Top 100 mods is worthy of being crowned Mod of the Year for 2022.
Phase 3: Mod of the Year 2022 Awarded
With those final votes calculated, as we move closer to Christmas, the winners will gradually be revealed over the following stages:
- Editors Choice Awards (22nd December)
- Players Choice: Unreleased Mod (27th December)
- Players Choice: Mod of the Year 2022 (28th December)
Promote Your Mod To Help Get Votes!
Modders, you should make as much noise about your game as possible to get it in front of potential voters! Luckily, we've created some tools to help you do just this.
Year In Review - Quartered
Strapped for ideas about the top headlines of 2022, or perhaps looking to check out some new mods before 2022 closes out? We've got you covered, with a breakdown of the top mod releases and news over the year. Four articles covering each quarter of the year, with twelve mods per quarter for a total of forty-eight mods, will give you plenty to chew on. The release of each article will be staggered like below:
- Quarter 1 (January - March) - December 2nd
- Quarter 2 (April - June) - December 3rd
- Quarter 3 (July - September) - December 4th
- Quarter 4 (October - December) - December 5th
Win Games for Voting
Every member from the community who votes has a chance to win a game from our #modlove collection. The more you participate, promote the awards and encourage your friends to vote the better your chance. In addition to this the winning mod teams will be heavily promoted across our network, get the prestigious honor of being able to include the award badge where-ever they damn well please, and be introduced to publishers interested in taking their idea to the next level.

The mods featured in the video have already placed in the previous MOTY 2021 and as such are unlikely to place again (as most are ineligible unless they place in the top 3; the top 3 from last year are ineligible altogether). This was the fairest way to ensure the video had something interesting to watch whilst avoiding skewing the results by showcasing an eligible mod.
