Thief: The Dark Project is a single player stealth-based game made by Looking Glass Studios for Microsoft Windows PCs and published in 1998 by Eidos Interactive. The player takes the role of Garrett, a master thief plying his trade in an unnamed city. Garrett posesses great thieving and stealth skills, including an almost preternatural ability to hide in shadows. These skills come partly from his growing up as a street urchin and from his later education with the secret society known as The Keepers. The game follows Garrett as he clashes with the powerful and embarks on a journey into the City's strange history, stirring up more than he bargained for.

I had to sail away from the City - not only because of hard times but also because I
wanted to contact my associates in another city located across the ocean. All was
fine - I got on board the ship and managed to stay undetected the entire trip.
But when we were approaching our destination, a severe storm arose.
The ship couldn't take such stress; it crashed and sank. However, I was lucky enough
to find a broken boat and to swim to the shore. I don't know how many others survived
and I really didn't care about it. It seems that there were several survivors but
I avoided their attention.
After a couple of hours, I came to the shore near the city but I couldn't find a place to get
out of water undetected - it seems that this city keeps an eye on its shore.
Guards, security cameras, mechanic guards - and they are everywhere.
At last I found a sewer passage leading to lighthouse service spaces. Likely, it's the
most quiet place on the shore. Perhaps I can get through it and vanish in the city. Unfortunately,
I lost all my gear in the water except for my blackjack, bow and the lockpicks, so I'll have to
either try to equip myself here or to sneak around the place.

- On Normal you'll just have to grab a little loot (about 1/3 of maximum) and get out of here.
- On Expert you'll have to find about 2/3 of all the loot and solve half of all the puzzles, then escape. You aren't allowed to kill any people! (Still, you can blackjack guards or kill non-human enemies.)
- On Impossible you'll have to find all the loot and solve all the puzzles, all this without killing any people. Only then can you get out.

Ich mußte aus der Stadt verschwinden - nicht nur wegen der harten Zeiten, sondern auch
weil ich Mitstreiter in einer anderen Stadt jenseits des Meeres treffen wollte.
Alles ging soweit gut - als blinder Passager gelangte ich an Bord eines Schiffes und
reiste ab. Doch kurz vor dem Ziel braute sich ein Sturm zusammen und das Schiff sank.
Zum Glück konnte ich mich an Bootstrümmer klammern und Land erreichen. Keine Ahnung,
wer das noch überlebt hat. Das ist auch gleich, ich wollte ja nicht entdeckt werden.
Nach einigen Stunden erreichte ich das Ufer nahe der Stadt, konnte aber keine Stelle
finden, wo ich unentdeckt hätte an Land gehen können - überall Wächter,
Bewegungsmelder und mechanische Wachen!
Schließlich fand ich einen Zugang zur Kanalisation unter dem Leuchtturm, offenbar der
diskreteste Teil der Küste. Vielleicht kann ich mich so in die Stadt einschleusen?
Dummerweise hat das Meer außer Prügel, Bogen und Dietrichen alles verschlungen, so
daß ich entweder hier meine Ausrüstung wieder aufstocken oder besonders vorsichtig
herumschleichen sollte.

Ìíå ïðèøëîñü óïëûòü èç Ãîðîäà - íå òîëüêî èç-çà òðóäíûõ âðåì¸í, íî òàêæå ïîòîìó, ÷òî
ÿ õîòåë íàëàäèòü ñâÿçè ñ ìîèìè êîëëåãàìè â äðóãîì ãîðîäå, ðàñïîëîæåííîì ïî òó ñòîðîíó
îêåàíà. Âñ¸ áûëî õîðîøî - ÿ ïðîáðàëñÿ íà êîðàáëü è ñóìåë îñòàòüñÿ íåçàìå÷åííûì â òå÷åíèå
âñåé ïîåçäêè. Íî êîãäà ìû ïðèáëèæàëèñü ê ìåñòó íàçíà÷åíèÿ, íåîæèäàííî íà÷àëñÿ ñóðîâûé
øòîðì. Êîðàáëü íå ñìîã åãî âûäåðæàòü, îí ðàçáèëñÿ î âîëíû è óòîíóë. Îäíàêî ìíå ïîâåçëî:
ÿ ñóìåë íàéòè ðàçáèòóþ ëîäêó è ïîïëûòü ê áåðåãó. ß íå çíàþ, ñêîëüêî åù¸ ÷åëîâåê âûæèëî,
ìíå áûëî íàïëåâàòü íà ýòî. Ïîõîæå, íåñêîëüêî âûæèâøèõ áûëî, íî ÿ èçáåæàë èõ âíèìàíèÿ.
×åðåç ïàðó ÷àñîâ ÿ äîáðàëñÿ äî ãîðîäñêîãî áåðåãà. Íî ÿ íå ìîã íàéòè ìåñòî, â êîòîðîì
ìîæíî âûáðàòüñÿ èç âîäû íåçàìåòíî - ïîõîæå, ãîðîä ñëåäèò çà ñâîèì áåðåãîì. Ñòðàæíèêè,
êàìåðû áåçîïàñíîñòè, ìåõàíè÷åñêèå ñòðàæè - è îíè ïîâñþäó.
Íàêîíåö ÿ íàø¸ë êàíàëèçàöèîííûé ïðîõîä, âåäóùèé â ñëóæåáíûå ïîìåùåíèÿ ìàÿêà. Ïîõîæå, ýòî
