Looking Glass Studios released the sequel to Thief in 2000. Utilizing the same DARK engine that powered the original Thief, Thief II had an almost identical look and feel, with only minor graphical and programming improvements. The basic gameplay was also fundamentally similar to the original Thief, but many new elements had been added, including technological gadgets such as a remote eye camera. Other changes include an increase in the number of A.I. behaviors, and the addition of female guards and soldiers. Responding to criticisms of the original Thief, the missions in Thief II were designed much more around typical thief-like behavior, and much of the game is spent robbing the rich denizens of the City rather than battling monsters. In fact, the player encounters almost none of the monsters from the original Thief except for burrick heads mounted as trophies in some of the mansions, and a few zombies and apparitions.

Description

I've been living in the Hightowne district for several months, but the new Sheriff is on to me, and the bluecoats are getting close to finding out where I live. It's time to move on - but not before one last job. Lord BlackFyre is the warden of Hightowne. He's known for collecting rare and valuable things, and his latest acquisition is no exception. A statue called the Weeping Widow, one of the last surviving works of art from the pre-Imperium days. Lord BlackFyre wants to sell the statue, but the Hammerites aren't too happy. They think it should be turned over to them since it's an ancient relic of their church. But if the Hammers aren't the highest bidder, too bad for them. The sale takes place in one week, and the Hammers are frantically trying to negotiate for it before it gets sold out from under them. Too bad I'm going to get there first. BlackFyre has installed an alarm system to protect his new trinket, but the controls to shut it off are in the basement.
