Features free-roaming gameplay that spans hundreds of star systems and numerous alien races. A compelling storyline pits the player against a vast enemy endangering all life in the galaxy. Hundreds of unique planetary systems filled with planets and asteroids that can be landed on and explored in real time. Players will interact with lifeforms (some hostile!) and mine minerals in order to raise capital for ship upgrades and fuel.
Choose from among three professions (Military, Science, Freelance). Upgrade your ship with new technology. Hire and train a crew. Encounter alien races–and when diplomacy fails, engage in real-time capital ship combat. The combat simulation takes place in real time, with some realism and arcade-style fun combined for a balanced gameplay. Powerups and debris from destroyed alien ships can be picked up by the player.
A series of training missions first introduces the player to the story that unfolds as the player completes missions and interacts with alien cultures. A complex quest system then takes the player into the home system to explore planets, and then out into deep space to explore other star systems and meet and interact with other alien races. As the plot develops multiple progressive galaxy wide shifts take place changing the dialogue and interactions with alien races on a fundamental level.
After several years, the game is now being updated for release on STEAM. Since the game is already 100% finished, this is an update, not a rewrite. Some aspects of the plot will be simplified, the Steam API added (obviously), and it will support multiple resolutions. If interested in helping with this new development update, please send me a message.
Hi everyone! My name is Blake, over the last couple of years I've been helping out Jon Harbour and Steve Wirsz on publicly releasing a new and improved 2.0 version of Starflight The Lost Colony! And by help I mean marketing, alpha testing and endless pestering (lol), similar to how I help out John Weaver on his awesome Starflight TLC Heroes of Arth project and Marvin's Starflight Remaking of a Legend project. I'm a big fan of the original Starflight games (in particular the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive version) and am passionate about the many fan projects out there. So much so that I recently made a video series trying out every single Starflight fan game out there digging up private demos and content the world has never seen before! One of my absolute favourite fan projects is Starflight The Lost Colony which at this point in time is still the only finished SF fan game in existence.
So if it was finished then what are we announcing here? Well for years after the original final release (Ver 1.03 2012) Jon wanted to go back to the project and give it a huge overhaul upgrading many areas and fixing any remaining issues. He even posted here at IndieDB announcing plans for a Steam release and put out a call for developers. However as is often the case real life became all encompassing and Jon just didn't have time to finish the game without help, which unfortunately hadn't been offered by anyone. So for a couple of years Jon's greatly enhanced but broken and unfinished version of Starflight TLC sat untouched. However in 2018 Jon and I started talking about cleaning up his unfinished version as best as possible and putting it up on Github so interested Starflight fans and developers could easily access the new version. One of Jon's former team members Steve Wirsz of the brilliant starflt.com resource pages agreed to help Jon look after the github repository and even decided to start working on the project again picking up where Jon left off and getting the new version alpha into a playable state for Starflight fans to test and report bugs on.
Well now that time has come and the new alpha version of Lost Colony ver 2.0 has now been released!
If you have never played Starflight the Lost Colony before we recommend you still check out the original final 2012 release first as that is more stable or simply watch the below video where Blake does a tour of the first few missions. Then please feel free to check out the new alpha and report any bugs you find in this forum thread here.

Blake, forget Steam get to:
Itch.io
..to take some easy money for the game.
TLC free on Steam was something Jon talked about many years ago. It's not something I or Steve have talked about doing. Itch is a good idea as I see many indie games there using its donation system however I'm pretty sure accepting donations would breach the TLC agreement made between Jon and Starflight licence holders Rod & Greg years ago. TLC can not make money. I'll pass on your suggestion to Steve anyway.
Hi,
I'm playing the Alpha of SF 2.0 and there is no music, only sound effects. In the Crew room, there is no colored gauge for the stats of the NPCs.
Cheers. I just tried the new 2.21 version and it looks like the music issue is all fixed however the crew colour bars are still missing. I'll let Steve know about it.
- Can you make quick start with complete ship and crew in next version.
Good idea, that would help with testing, I'll pass your suggestion on to the dev!
Uh Steam doesn't have it.
Update:
Alpha of the new Starflight TLC 2.0 version has been released (here at IndieDB not on Steam).

Unfortunately due to real life commitments, lack of support and help Jon didn't go through with the steam release.
He did still work on a simplified overhauled version of the original Starflight - The Lost Colony 2012 Final release (freely available here & on the TLC homepage) however this updated version has not been released at this time although judging by my recent discussions with him he may release this unfinished enhanced version to github in 2019.
