I'm playing it right now on a Windows 10 PC so it definitely works... but it won't display ship textures on my laptop with its tiny Intel IGP. So it seems like it doesn't play nicely with weak IGPs or certain laprop drivers, nothing I can do about that though.

If you are unable to modify game files, it's because Windows 10 operates similarly to Windows 7, in that you need to give yourself administration rights. Go to: C:\Program Files\Activision. Right click on properties. Click on Security and then click on the Edit button. You will see a list of directories under 'Group or user names'. Every one of these line item directories will require you to go through and click 'Allow'. Apply the change to each one. You will now be allowed to make program changes to SFC3. Before you install the Windows 10 patch, it is recommended the Taldren patch have been installed first. If you are playing a custom mod, it will be necessary to change the galactic map directory (.mvm)within the .ini file. To do this: C:\Program Files\Activision\(Your Custom Mod)\Assets\Scripts\Campaigns - open any of the campaign files as an .MCT or .TEXT file. You will see an example of this:

EarlyMapName="TYPHON2018.mvm"
MidMapName="TYPHON2018.mvm"
LateMapName="TYPHON2018.mvm"

Copy this portion: TYPHON2018.mvm and now open the .ini file: C:\Program Files\Activision\(your custom mod) and open the sfc configuration file as a .TEXT

Scroll down to where it says:[Meta]
Look for the .mvm extension name. Make sure it matches the campaign for your mod. If not copy the map name like this, for example: MapName=TYPHON2018.mvm

Accept the changes and you should be ready to play your game.

Yes. Scroll down to the Windows 10 fix on my page and refer to the links that will take you to the Hot & Spicy SFC forums. The issues for getting the stock game to play correctly can be found there as well. A fix using the SFC Launcher and dgVoodoo + reShade downloads should correct the issue.

Download the Windows 10 Patch. Copy the new d3d8.dll to the Sfc3 main directory. Download the corrected sfc.ini file (link provided below) to the Sfc3 main directory. If you are playing the original out-of-box Taldren game, no further modification is required. If you are playing a mod, make sure the .mvm name(mod's galactic map) is changed in the ini file. This is toward the bottom ([Meta]) and would look like this, for example: MapName=TYPHON2018.mvm

I have recently modified the sfc configuration (sfc.ini) for Jan_B's Windows 10 fix to correct the Window-in-Window issue. It will now allow the stock Taldren game and mods to operate on full display for both laptops and monitors. I will have the configuration fix up shortly for download with the link for this mod.

I did a skirmish and i saw weapons fire but again couldnt see my ship or the enemy ship.

Sounds like you may have a game install issue separate from the Windows 10 mod fix. I would recommend uninstalling the game and clearing the cache files (look for Activision on your C drive and remove the directory for sfc3 if found). Reinstall the game and the All Language Taldren patch (you can find a copy of the REQUIRED patch with either our Typhon Pact or Mirror campaign mods (click on user name: AlDaja) if you can not find the patch elsewhere) prior to installing the game/patch or mods, remember to deactivate your virus software. Once completed, install Jan_B’s Windows 10 fix. As noted, it will not correct the Window-in-Window (W/W) issue, especially on some laptops. If this mod alone does not correct the W/W issue, download the addendum patch I recently put up (link is in the comments for this download or you can find it on our download page by clicking on my user name). If the W/W persists, it will require manual manipulation of the 3D line codes in the .ini file (sfc3 configuration file) found in the main directory of the game to correct the issue. If you are not certain how to do that, let me know and I’ll try to walk you through it. I should note, make sure that you check the last W/W you had up on your computer for previous Window apps. If the Windows box is not at full screen, Windows 10 will default to the previous W/W setting regardless of Jan’s Windows 10 fix.

OK, I'll tackle the game display in a moment, but am going to assume the black screen problem is no longer an issue. Black screen with sound is what you'll get prior to installing the Windows 10 patch. Presuming game install/Taldren patch was successful, install the Windows 10 patch, which is basically dragging the d3d8.dll and .ini files in the download and letting them replace the existing ones in the main sfc3 directory. As far as messing with the .ini line codes, I think it would be best to forgo that suggestion unless you are using your own custom mod, in which case, the only items you need to change is the galactic map (.mvm) destination; I can give you specifics on that if indeed you are using a custom mod. If you are using one or both of the mods on my home page, then you will need to download the Windows 10 addendum link provided on my page as it includes the .ini files required for those mods. Anyway..

As far as the display is concerned:

For laptop displays:Right click on your game icon (do this for each version of sfc3 you may have) on the desktop. Click on properties. Click on compatibility. Click on the 'Run compatibility troubleshooter'. Click on 'Try recommended settings'. The app will ask you to test the game. Although it will be in windowed view, you should see that the toolbar at the bottom of your screen is now hidden. Exit the game and save the setting when prompted in the troubleshooting app. The app should have autoset SFC3 to now run in Windows XP (Service Pack 3). A shield will now display over the SFC3 desktop icon and you will be prompted each time you load the game if you want Windows to make changes to the game setting, click yes each time. If for some reason it doesn't autoset, click the box that says run for compatibility and select the Windows XP (Service Pack 3) from the menu.

For display on external monitor:

Do the same steps above, but change your scale and layout to 100% (if not already preset) and change the monitor resolution to one that allows it to fill the screen. I have mine set to 1024 x 768.

So far, I have been able to play the stock game and have had no problems on full screen with the tutorial or original mission campaigns. I have also played through on the three custom mods our team made: Typhon Pact, Bonus and MirrorrorriM and haven't encountered and issue with the external monitor slaved from my laptop.

EDIT:

Windows 10 addendum link for the following mods: Typhon Pact + Bonus & MirrorrorriM no longer is available. The .ini file is included with both mods for easy install.

Ok, I got this to work by searching for the file d3d8.dll in my own "windows" folder and copying this to the main SFC3 folder. Now I can run the game in fullscreen and no black screen anymore. I run windows 10, ver.1809

I have gotten it to work on win 10 build 1809 using d3d8.dll from windows. However only windowed mode... and if I try fullscreen too many times the game will eventually fail to start.

Try setting the game to run on Windows Service pack 3 for XP and adjust the display resolution to 1024 x 768.

Indeed , file from windows 10 latest build solves crashing. This file from here crashes.
P.S
get sfc3upgrademodwidescreenfix and use either 16:9 or 16:10 exe from it (and sprite + read readme). set rendering =3 in sfc ini if resolution 1080p or just read readme and set diff resolution. Game will play in borderless fullscreen

Need a bit more info on this one, no weapons? If the Windows 10 patch didn't work, from what I experienced, you can't see anything for the game - no ships, etc. just a black screen. If everything appears to work, but weapons graphics don't show up when activated, it would seem something didn't get installed properly for the game unrelated to the patch. I would recommend uninstalling the entire game from the Activision folder and delete cache files. Reinstall SFC:III and the Taldren patch, then reinstall the Windows 10 patch. Make sure your virus software is disabled prior to re-install. I would also recommend re-downloading the patch in the event your virus software may have deleted something either from the patch or your SFC:III files. After the game/patches have been installed, your virus software can be restored and it should ignore the files on your system.

What version of Direct X do you have installed? By chance, did you install the older Direct X (8.0, I think it was) when installing SFC:III?

Hey everyone, I found a fix for it. You need to get the dgVoodoo2 wrapper. When you have it, copy the following files into the main folder: dgVoodoo.conf, dgVoodooCpl.exe and all the files from MS folder.

For HD resolutions you can use the newest patch from D4v1ks

This is unrelated to the Win 10 fix, but it seems you have a game glitch of sorts. If the stardate is not changing, but the progression meter continues to cycle, this indicates an issue with a mission script or scripts.

I'd suggest uninstalling the game and reinstall to see if it corrects the problem. If this is a stock version of the game you are trying to play, make sure you install the Taldren ALL Language patch prior to playing the game. If you are playing this on Windows 10 you will need dgVoodoo to correct graphic/display issues.

A recent Windows 10 update broke the patch, to fix it you need to get the dgVoodoo2 wrapper. When you've downloaded it, copy the following files: dgVoodoo.conf, dgVoodooCpl.exe and all the files from the x64 and x86 folders inside the MS folder into the main SFC3 folder.
