Report RSS Dev Blog: Naval Systems

Who doesn't want to sail the high seas, finding hidden islands and their treasures, or embarking of pirate adventures? This feature blog discusses the plans we have for an exciting and involved naval system in Embers of Caerus.

The World

The world of caerus is split into 5 major continents. 4 of these will have players starting on them, while the fifth is a twisted place full of riches and extreme dangers. All of these continents however are separated by great oceans which can only be crossed by boat, seamlessly from one continent to another.

We didn't just want sailing to be "that thing you have to do to get to another continent", rather we wanted a fun and involved experience. We want being a great ships captain and naval navigator to be a viable career choice, not just a novelty. People should seek you out for your knowledge, skill and experience. This video goes over how we want this system to shape up, and some of the influences of the system. We hope you enjoy it!

That is one of the coolest things I have ever heard. I have never found a game with a really good, complete naval system like what you are describing (something where experience and exploration and such will be so valuable). I love the idea of having to create your own charts. It would give a cool advantage to people who invest the time to explore and create charts so that they know the waters.

Will there be any kinds of "sea monsters" or other such non-player dangers out at sea?

We hope to add things like that, yes, but we will see. Maybe not for initial release, but we will try to get in a "terrors of the deep" or similar expansion later on if we don't :)

cool.

I have a few questions about the game. I have not had time to read through all of the info here and on ya'lls site, so I apologize if these questions have already been answered.

Is the game going to be first-person, third-person, or both (like skyrim)?

for working with sails and such on the ship (idk if these details have been worked out yet) will it basically be a matter of getting into some position and then holding an "action" key of some kind and waiting while your character completes the task? And human players will have a shorter "timer" than NPCs?

Will there be a way to fish. Like to build a ship and use it as a fishing vessel (either for profit or just as a food source while on long voyages)?

First person only.

Yes, pretty much (unless we come up with a better way to do it). There is slightly more to it than that in the current design though.

We certainly hope so! Whether it will make the release list, or go out shortly after, it is too early to say.

Thanks for your questions :)

Excelent, I think that first person is much more immersive.
