Title: PSX Doom HUD for Vanilla
Author: Kippykip
Year: 2016
Version: V1.3
Description:
Here is a simple WAD that changes the PC doom in the style of the PSX version.
The wad changes the:
- Hud
- Sounds
- Font
- Skull
- Weapon speeds
The HUD layout is changed to fit with the PC layout however.
It replaces all original sounds to the sounds from the PSX Port.
The WAD also uses a DeHackEd patch where it just changes the speed of the weapons to similar speeds from
the PSX port (PAL).
This WAD was intended for Vanilla Doom therefore it should be compatible with all sourceports!
There is also a PSXDoom Enhanced (PSXDoomEnhanced.wad) which has higher quality sounds,
a few sprite adjustments and blood spots!
However the enhanced wad needs a sourceport! (Due to extra graphics without importing everything from an IWAD)
It's possible to get the Enhanced one running in Vanilla Doom using some importing.
Enjoy!
Changelog:
V1.3
- Fixed a very minor palette issue with these mini font characters: @ _ Q
- Fixed a bug where the blood drops clip under the ground a bit in GZDoom
(when you have the default sprite OpenGL clipping settings. For PSXDoomEnhanced.wad)
- Added the bigfont for ZDoom based engines (Shamelessly taken from PSXDoom TC).
- Added a Multiplayer menu graphic for Zandronum
- Fixed the frame timing for the Pistol Flash in DEHACKED.
- Added Colour Translation Tables for PrBoom based engines so the new font won't have palette issues.
I had to develop a small program to convert PNGs to Doom palette to PrBoom translation tables.
Took QUITE a lot of time to do so I certainly hope you enjoy the HUD/Message colours in this Doom engine!
V1.2.1
- Fixed a very small but annoying issue, where the chaingun sound would crack/pop in ZDoom based engines.
V1.2
- Fixed the small red line palette issue with the hud numbers.
- Also made the hud numbers thinner, which also involved re-aligning the status bar sections slightly.
- Fixed the speeds of the weapons slightly. The Shotgun is now just a tad slower to be correct,
- The chainsaw speed was changed backed to the original PC/PAL version due to it having the NTSC speed before! Oops...
- Added PSXDoomEnhanced.wad (Same as PSXDoom, but has some little extras):
Also please don't mix this together with PSXDoom.wad, it already includes everything you need from the original PSXDoom.WAD.
- Some of the higher quality sounds from the iphone Doom (32000hz!)
- And blood drops in this WAD! (Not a PSX thing, but it's cool regardless)
To turn them off, just comment out the "blood" areas in the DEHACKED file inside of the PSXDoomEnhanced.wad
(Source: Aspectsweb.co.uk)
- Raised Chaingun frames higher and shifted the chainsaw by 1 pixel on the 2nd animations (like the PSX).
V1.1
- Fixed multiplayer MUG colours (by disabling them, the PSX version had no MUG colours).
- Added FRAGS on the status bar.
- Made ARMS look very slightly better on the status bar.
- Extended the ARMOR part on the status bar by 1 pixel (This way the MUG face is directly in the middle).
- Full PSX mini font!
- Replaced all big text with ones from the PSX font except for the intermission screen.
(Kept it this way otherwise if you play Final Doom, it will have the wrong titles for the intermission screen)
- PSX Menu skull!
- Included the DEHACKED patch inside the WAD aswell in case you're using a modern sourceport.
- Adjusted the Keys so they fit slightly better on the HUD.
V1.0
- Original WAD Release.
Does this change the music as well? Because I found the PSX doom music wad and wanted to know if I used that mod and this one, would there be an issue??
No it doesn't change the music, PSX Midi music would be cool though!
Also if you're talking about the PSXTCMUS.PK3 mod that you downloaded, you will need the PSX Doom TC (Total Conversion) for it to work.
I suggest using the total conversion as I mentioned before, it replaces everything in the game with coloured lighting, maps etc like it did in the PSX original!
If you don't want to use the total conversion but still want the PSX music, I'm willing to make you a simple mod that changes to the PSX music to work standalone!
never mind I tried it. I had to use the other mod as well to get the music. Man Friggin thank you. I have been wanting to play the PSX version again but I hate the controls. this is so awesome man. thank you so much
You should really check out the PSX Doom TC instead. It converts the entire PC Doom to look and play almost exactly like the Playstation port with the colour effects, music and everything!
This one was just intended for vanilla Doom to make it similar but not exact.
I found one small issue. when you fire the chaingun, pick up an item, search a wall, and when an elevator has stopped, you hear a slight pop in the audio. I tried messing around with settings and couldn't get it to stop. You notice it the most when firing the chaingun.
Just looked into it, it seems to happen in ZDoom ports for some reason, but it doesn't happen when you use PSXDoomEnhanced.wad (but that's because it uses a different sound effect entirely).
I'm uploading a fix right now, thanks for letting me know! But sorry I'm only responding now as I never got an email that you replied!
Look out for version 1.2.1
no problem man. Much appreciated. I would go for the PSX doom TC mod but I don't think it would work with Doom Touch. I also run these mods on my phone, SHIELD Portable, SHIELD Tablet and SHIELD Android TV.
I've gotten it to work with Doom touch, but you gotta change the engine on the top left to GZDoom. In the command line type
"-file PSXDOOM.PK3 PSXTCMUS.PK3"
However the problem is, GZDoom runs slow on Android so it won't be as smooth as using PrBoom+, I've never tried it on tablets/Nvidia shields
I'll see if there's a way to to play MP3/OGG music on PrBoom though!
This has the best quality sound effects. I can say without a doubt that your SFX are the clearest sounding of all! So much that the shotgun sounds completely different! This is really awesome, if you can make a music mod with the same quality I would love it! PSX sounds are awesome but the only reason I hadn't been using them is because the mods usually sound exactly as if I was playing the PSX, and some people do like that, but I prefer clear SFX.
Nice work, I love this.
PS: This works perfectly with Smooth Doom! I love this mod sooo much!
Just realized the Enhanced version has different sounds, but I actually prefer it that way. PSX Doors and stuff with great sounding guns.
Thanks man! But credit goes to this guy for the clear PSX sounds:
Doomworld.com
I only converted them into the original Doom sound format, so they should work on any Doom port out there.
The "Enhanced" WAD however has a mix of the high quality "Pk Doom SFX wad" and a mix of the PSX ones. The shotgun sound however is a shorter version from another game's shotgun sound effect I edited in audacity. Used this sound because it sounded way closer to the PSX Shotgun compared to the "PK SFX WAD" shotgun's sound.
Well glad you enjoy it!
Sidenote I noticed the new blood drops in PSXDoomEnhanced.wad don't work with SmoothDoom. Bummer. Everything else though seems to work perfectly.
EDIT2: Just realised that SmoothDoom already has bloodspots, you just need to enable them.
I'm an idiot...
You're good, I do have a question though. Is it possible for you to make the hud as an ACS? Because I like it a ton but a lot of the custom .wads I play have their own status bar that overwrites yours and frankly I hate them. Thanks!
Oh, not sure if it'll even override the other mods if I were to make an acs version, something I'll have to try one day.
I think for now though, you'll have to delete "SBARINFO" from the wads with custom huds unfortunately.
thanks for this mod man. it works really well. I use the PSX doom TC on my PC but I use your sound effects mod combined with the music to give me the PSX doom experience on the go
The thing is, that it doesn't color the sectors, and it doesnt change the sidedef textures.. wow that actually rhymes
Could make an addon only for the sound effects ? Because, I love PSX Doom sounds pretty much !
Thank you, I am loving the monster sounds. Great standalone mod.
