Planetary engine that can be used with real elevation data of arbitrary resolution, while being progressively enhanced by fractal algorithms. The fractal algorithms refine and introduce details down to centimeter resolution and can be parametrized by elevation and land class data. A completely random fractal terrain is possible too, or a terrain can be sketched in rough resolution with fractal generating the details. Level of detail ranges from thousands of kilometers down to centimeters, with full visibility. The engine is fully asynchronous, majority of the algorithms running on the GPU while the rest is distributed to multiple CPU cores.
Using a database of >100k stars to liven up the space views.
Arrays galore. Nice pic :)
Just wondering, can you explore every inch of what you see?
Can you actually GO to each of those star systems like Infinity: TQFE, or is it just a nice auto-generating star background?
It's just a background, but the star positions and magnitudes are taken from a database of real stars, not autogenerated.
We have no intention to go to the far space ATM, we want to focus on the Earth itself and then later also on the nearby planets and moons.
so....maybe later on...when your bored... done this for the most part...and want to do something more? or will you just make a game for this engine, stop working on anything online whatsoever, or what? it would be nice to know those details...
We want it to be able to support an online game, but you can make a huge online game on Earth alone, or just in our solar system. It doesn't necessarily have to be a whole universe of random stars and planets, or at least not in the first iteration. We'd rather make a game about a recolonization of Earth, or about colonization of the solar system, or later nearby stars with artificially modeled planets made interesting .. not an infinity of random but still similar planets. People dream about it but I don't know what's so intriguing on it .. it's like a vast steppe with few motives repeating over and over.
A planet is really huge when you have with ground level detail, I think that many people are not really aware of what they will get.
Btw you seem to have many questions, I encourage you to come to our forum where you can discuss it with other people and to see their ideas too :)
well, i mean, anyway, could this game support a form of crafting system similar to say, minecraft or stranded 2? we have already seen the graphics and theyre amazing, i swear all the future games will use this engine until a new version of it is out with entire galaxies, imagine, a game i like say....spore, with full sized planets!
Where exactly did you find this star chart, and was it very difficult to properly integrate?
