As many of you may be aware, the folks over at Valve have released a new update to Steam. Whilst this update includes a lot of specific optimisations and support for HDR in preperation for Day of Defeat: Source's release on the 26th, it also has the nasty side effect of playing hell with any games running on the Source engine.

Known symptoms include crashes of any Source-powered game after around 5 minutes of playing, mods not being able to load due to a gameinfo.txt error, and innumerable lighting and visual errors especially in mods using post-processing effects (such as Dystopia and Garry's Mod).

At the moment the best thing to do is sit back, relax, go outside, listen to nature, and wait for Valve to either roll-back the update, release a fix, or release the updated SDK so mods can work around the problem.

We'll keep you posted.

UPDATE: It seems that the crashes and load errors have been fixed, however post-processing effects are still broken. Restart Steam to make sure you have the latest version which includes these fixes.

It's mostly effects that are screwed.

Like garrys mod's bloom effect has a nice wireframe across the screen

After I got the update I couldn't view any cut-scenes at the beginning or end of Half Life 2, just a black screen with the voice in the background. Lousy steam, I hate that thing. Whatever happened to the easy installation and everything that the other games have, none of this log-on the internet crap.

If you don't have a DX9 card, use -dxlevel on the shortcut you use to play.

i cant get servers to show up in any source game. i hit refresh all and 10 seconds later i have maybe 2 or 3 servers listed that have 2000+ ping. and when i try to join them it says SERVER IS OUT OF DATE.

Every mod I try seems to have issues. Especially if its multiplayer. I really hope Valve is working around the clock this weekend to get it fixed. This is plain ridiculous.
