Post news Report RSS New element + Gel Spoilers

A new testing element has been revealed - and some more info about the Gels!

Posted by on

The Gel Conversion Ring was developed by Aperture in an attempt to reverse the effects of its previous Gels. It is a metal hoop which swaps the type of the gel passing through it - as in 'bouncy gel goes in, sticky gel comes out', etc.

The gel types it converts are listed below:

Repulsion Gel > Attraction Gel (and vice versa)
Propulsion Gel > [TBA GEL TYPE] (and vice versa)
Conversion Gel > [TBA GEL TYPE] (and vice versa)

SPOILER: There may be at least two new gels, as well as the Attraction Gel. PLEASE DON'T PM ME ASKING FOR YOUR GEL TO BE INCLUDED!

Also, we are working on the Attraction Gel. With some help from reepblue, we have realised there is probably no way to make it completely mimic the effect in TAG - but we will do our best. It will still stick.

UPDATE: This article has got Enhancement featured on modding podcast Podcast17!

I wouldn't bet on using attraction gel unless the source code is released.

I don't know if the code will be released, but I think will not, though I hope the contrary (portal 1 docet).

If developers aren't going for walking on walls and ceiling but simply make the player stick to surfaces, then it's a pretty simple setup made with existing entities.

Hammer offers a lot of opportunities for prototyping, I did in fact the very same paint mechanic in Portal (dynamic, not scripted like the others), so the limits are only in the imagination.

With Attraction Gel being Enhancement's big plus point, something players often wanted, we already have several ideas to test. I won't tell people until release - we don't want people making Attraction Gel themselves as that would ruin Enhancement.

Personally, I feel six gels (seven, with water) might be too many, confusing to the point of bad game design… though I’m not sure how much sense it would make to have one of the existing gels convert to another, given this conversion ring explanation. And what if the rinse gel went through the ring?
