I think it would be best to go with a free 3D world.. I think everyone is use to the 2D side-scrollers. All the 3D Sonic games had good potential, but they tried adding new elements and characters, when they should have just stuck to the old good stuff.. Like interesting levels, music, and gameplay. Sonic Robo Blast 2 is a very well done fan game, perhaps something along those lines.

Multiplayer is kinda hard to say.. You can have different game modes, like Racing, Death Matches, Capture the Flag.. Depending on how the Special Stages are set up, maybe one of those where you duel with another player to see who can get a good amount of rings..

Oh, and if you guys need a modeler, PM me. ^_^

I think the main problem with 3D Sonic games (excluding the atrocity that is Sonic the Hedgehog 06 of course) is that they have poor camera work, loads of glitches, and bad gameplay and design choices (Shadow and Silver, I'm looking at you) to the point at which the game is unplayable.

A good idea might be to do something like Super Mario Galaxy and Sonic Unleashed: Have 3D gameplay AND 2.5D gameplay. The 2.5D parts could be classic high speed platforming, while the 3D ones could be slower and more timed 3D platforming.

I'm looking forward to having a go at mapping for this mod.

i believe side scrolling stays truer to the name, allowing the players to go faster and see whats ahead of them. it makes the game mechanics very simple, reducing the learning curve and can deepen the playing experience. three-dimensions... well we all know what happened to sonic and his 3D-bits... they were painful and time consuming, long and boring and without preset tracks, your character would fall off the loops... eh i can think of at least 50 other glitches and problems with the 3D-venturing platform, so i believe its best we leave that platform as simple as possible.

not to throw out the 3D platform entirely though. :)

but remember the greatness of Sonic Rush and the DS? well, think of it like that. 3d models in a two-dimensional scroller. true to the name.
--

CUSTOM CHARACTERS! if anything, the ability to customize your own charater as in hl2 and many other Source games. but with the exceptional ability to upload them and use them and have other players be able to see them, like in MMORPGs.
--

Implement Sonic Battle, if anything has to go three-dimensional. i see no other reason a sonic character should have to suffer wandering around in 3D space except in a localized, 'controlled' space. using that space to either fight or travel to other areas/servers like in sonic adventure.
--

i have many other ideas that i've yet to discuss with anyone. many great ideas ever since Sonic Team developed Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog...

2D and 3D platforming should be utilized to its fullest extent. but never one or the other.

hey, im not some slab-minded individual. i actually have some great ideas for a new Sonic game that will attract sonic fans from all over!
i really want to see this game go forward and become excellent! and if there is anything i can assist you with, let me know.
--

P.S. how are you planning to make a 3D platform, fps into a side-scroller anyway? i actually want to use this in a game idea i have. a fighter, if you will.

Making a 2D side scroller is possible in a 3D FPS. Unreal 3 has a 2D side scrolling mod, though I have no idea how good it is.. Though custom characters would be so sweet. Games need more custom stuff in it.. What would be neat is having a drag and drop system for making characters, like Spore but not as advanced. I've always wanted a feline character in a Sonic game... Like.. A real one... Not some Totoro knock off. o.o;;

You could do like in the newest Sonic game. Or like in Megaman X7. Have the levels a 2D side scroller, but when in a Boss fight/Battle, go into a 3D arena. Must have large arena with destructables though. ^_^

hey, actually i just remembered. there already is a mod that fully utilizes a third-person view in an rts mod called HL2: Wars. it basically changes the entire game of hl2 into a war between rebels and combine soldiers. its already on ModDB, just search for it. or, rather, here's the link: Moddb.com

Ideas. (yeah, more from me)

When Sonic or a sonic-type player approaches a wall with enough speed, he or she should wall-run it. ~to the extent where he can run along the sides of vertical structures and buildings without stop and without succumbing to gravity, allowing him to quickly reach areas normally inaccessible by slower players.

As for strength characters, like Knuckles, player's abilities should be accustomed to high-jumping. and i don't mean some sad, girly frog hop. i mean a great, satisfying and sustaining leap of greatness. of prowess and strength. perhaps by punching the ground, or swinging off a pole for speed.

of course, these features i've mentioned should be tested first for brokedness or simply if the differences are broken. (lol "brokedness")

also and again, Customizable Characters - but along with that i would like to add the necessity for additional species and types of animals, sizes, and themes. It would be nice for Fox McCloud to make a random appearance if we so felt it was necessary. but then, that may be going too far. :)

also, perhaps we can make the customization process similar to accessing tools and items in Garry's Mod. which could perhaps further simplify the creation process.

hmm, and... suggesting adding tools and handheld weapons or accessories. OR both.

uniquely different tools and upgrades for players, perhaps clothing as well, to increase diversity in customizations. like dash accessories, or EMP gadgets. used when in battles with enemies or boss fights for different strategies and advantages. maybe even some gauge-type system which specifies what can be used and when, or if at all.

also, i am in need of platforming tips; making the players contour to quarter-pipes, loops, and terrain. like traditional sonic games, both 2d and 3d. if anyone has a suggestion on how that should be done, please let me know. try searching for skateboarding or topics which involve contouring to terrain in hl2, tf2, css, or any Source game.

Hmm, I like GuyFauxe' ideas/theory. 3D for slower platforming action, 2.5D (as in a 2D plane of movement, with 3D visuals, maybe even 'sidesteps') for faster classic sonic action. How would you apply it though? Would it switch at certain points between 3D and 2.5D? Would certain levels be either 2.5D or 3D? Adding to that, how about another 2.5D view, ie. overhead birds-eye view? Will the 3D be over-the-shoulder third person (view fixed to the character)? Or maybe 'isometric' eg. Sonic CD (as in, a view fixed to the world, not fixed to the character, though focus is on the character of course; sidescrolling is another example of this). Damn. So many possibilities.

An important part though to note, is the control scheme. If you use WASD for movement, then WASD should *always* be used for movement, etc. Do you get what I mean? Keep it intuitive, basically. You don't want people to have to learn 3 different control schemes for 3 different types of sections in the one game. Perhaps as an example, Halo, even the vehicle sections used the same control scheme as the FPS sections.

yeah, i was planning on keeping the control scheme as is. i was actually thinking of promoting the use of a joypad as well, maximizing effectiveness of control, with fully functional orbiting camera in 3D platform. as in most 3D platforms.

great idea Harimau. keep em coming. :D

i recently had the privilege of playing an awesome old-skool STH-1 mod, an invaluable lesson to remember how good the old days of 2D platforming were. the many difficulties and infinite possibilities. high jumping, finding alternate routes and having to "spin dash" (keep in mind this is the first Sonic on Gen) to complete stages. almost had a "Mario" feel to them.

personally, if done right, i believe the 2.5D platform will do exceptionally well - as a final addition. first, in the 3d platform, we will need to standardize the players' movements and controls. set an adequate jump height, run speed - and a "cap", wall-jumping(my add), defining move-sets for different "type" characters - including some hybrid characters, setting up props such as rails, ramps and speed boosts, canons, springs, bob-traps and enemies. also, we will need a life-system. perhaps as a player dies, they simply reset to their last checkpoint for as many "lives" they have instead of waiting for a server restart. (may be really good for CtF)

and to answer your questions, the best i can, we need to first iron-out the 3d platform. first, and key, we need the characters to "stick" to the level, instead of running off of the tops of levels, as in classic fps are accustomed to. normal alignments to the map brush faces. eh, i gotta get back to this...

I think it should be 3D grafic and 2D Gameplay. Thats the original Sonic game feeling :D Sonic isn't Sonic if it's not in 2D

It would be an interesting idea to try to implement, as previously mentioned, the fast paced 2.5d parts and slower 3d parts but an alternative 2 the crappy camera angle would be to do it through 1st person unless doin a groud spin were it could zoom out to a third person view to give you a better view when aiming, the not worry about the spining in the air for the 3d, just have a normal jump with a line of code to make impact on player = damage, sorta cheat the spin jump. Multiplayer could be done like the sonic DS game were it is just a bout between ppl, to who can jump/spin the most damage on to the other player, and have some of those maps 3d and other 2.5....if you could be bothered doing all this extra work...Keep up the good work and if you need any help...PM me any time. gud luck

we need supersonic speedy sidescrolling adventure. Like it was in oldschool sonic games. run run RUN (on ground, on walls, on ceilings, on water). simple (with 1 button for jump and 4 directional) and replayable. like Sonic 2... on Source engine...
No one needs all that new crap SEGA adding to games - open world, new characters (no one even remember them (and no one even cares will them be in new sonic game or not), we like Sonic for speed. He became super-popular character for his speed.

and make splitscreen multiplayer for all levels with mode like in STH2 on Genesis. it'd be just awesome :D
