Terminal laser illumination is required at the kill box (arrival basket) for the missile to receive final targeting information. If there is no JTAC around the area to designate, missile will simply go ballistic.
The missile uses dual-mode imaging-IR and semi-active laser homing seeker. SALH is used to keep the imaging IR seeker locked onto the target; once target is designated, continuous laser illumination is no longer needed, as missile will continue tracking using imaging-IR seeker.
