Welcome to the Official ModDB site for "Wars of the Gods - Ancient Wars" Mod by ToonTotalWar and Bran Mac Born. Here you will find latest news, updates and download area for the mod.

For all of you who are new here, this modification gives you one of the largest overhauls for Total War: Rome 2 game. We have also been inspired by the original Rome Total War game which we pride ourselves on the inspiration, mechanics and game play from great mods such as Roma Surrectum and SPQR. The mod is about Wars and expanding and conquering, but it still gives you an option to plan and build your empire!

Wars Of The Gods is not a College Thesis, or micro managing and nor is it an extension of Vanilla game, It is totally unique experience and we are proud what we have delivered in this mod to our players.

Features include:

Unlocked all factions for Grand Campaign, Imperial Augustus, Wrath of Sparta, Caesar In Gaul, Hannibal At The Gates, Empire Divided and Rise of the Republic with Traits and Victory Conditions added for all factions. Thats over 345 Major and Minor factions to choose from.

Features include:

  • Unlocked Factions for Grand Campaign, Imperial Augustus, Wrath of Sparta, Ceaser In Gaul , Hannibal At The Gates and Rise of the Republic

  • Over 1500 units added across all factions

  • Unique AOR (Area Of Recruitment) for many units

  • Roman Army Major Overhaul

  • Various BAI and CAI updates to give much smoother, historically realistic and better gameplay experience.

  • Unique UI, Loading Screens, Unit Cards

  • All units for all factions have received a reskin overhaul and much more....

Many other features include Graphical and Campaign Gameplay improvements.

Also in September 2018 the mods BAI & CAI have received a total overhaul and the in game mechanics totally changed so that the AI is stretched to its capacity to perform on its decisions on Diplomacy and Strategy.

Here is a flavour of what to expect......AI armies are well balanced mix of units and are powerful and Faction growth with expansion and formation of empires. Also your allies will assist and aid in wars with you, less squalor and more food production, cities are harder to take down as the ai will defend them. Ai will be aggressive and attack you and will grow stronger still as the campaign continues faction growth with improved factions will research more and build up their cities.

Battles in game are also now more creative by the AI when facing your opponents as they will plan there attacks carefully. AI armies keep their formations better and are clever -units will disengage reform and attack your weak points, better flanking, units will counter player moves better, battles last longer...but not too long, units have better endurance and morale, better AP for javelin units. battle will be tough and bloody affairs-do not take AI faction for granted they are not push overs.

The Mods preferred level to be played on is Hard/Very Hard difficulties. Please visit our website which is located in right column next to "Homepage" to view more details and the additional mods we recommend you to use that are compatible.

Experienced Players:If you want the most challenging campaign it is recommended you play on Very Hard Campaign difficulty and use some of the following submods: Harder Economy, Double Research and Building Costs, Total Slaughter or the Super Slaughter submod. Also if you play as the Romans the preferred level is Very Hard as they have buffs in game so that the AI when using them stay in game and do not get wiped out early on!

So that's it for now and stay tuned for further developments....

IMPORTANT NOTE: This mod is only compatible with the sub mods that are listed on our download section or steam sites and any other mods are not supported and will give either erratic game play or crashes in game. We will only consider and offer help on bug reports with the provision that you are using no other unsupported mods, however if you wish to contact the mod authors direct to confirm if compatible, thanks.

On Major updates to mod we advise a new start as some save games will not be compatible, however we will always try and let you know if they are save game compatible. Also on major updates it is always best to start a new campaign game so that you can play with all the new stuff that has been added.

WOW this is one hell of a great update. The campaign AI is remarkable in pursuit of destroying the player. Incredible challenge of a game! The battles are more intense than ever. I am testing this without any sub mods at the moment and it is superbly awesome. Rock and roll--bravo!

This is the only mod i want to play for R2TW. However, please please please, don't give every Roman unit pants. It's been known for a long time that Rome saw pants as barbaric. So giving MOST of them pants, even the Caesar civil war era units, is just disappointing. Even vanilla didn't make them wear pants. I'll understand if the unit or legion is stationed in cold places like Germanica or Gaul but even the souther legions are wearing pants. I know this seems like a trivial and even nonsensical rant but it's just so bizzare seeing legions of Romans wearing pants knowing how much they looked down on such an idea. Please remove the pants for most of the units and just give them regular tunics and caligae.

Hey there!

Me and my friend have been playing this mod for over 2 years or more, we absolutely love it.

I can't thank you enough for the massive amounts of fun this great mod has given us.

I know it's quite a silly question but is there any way of playing Judea in the campaign?
the units are beautiful and at this point we want to make the People's Front of Judea (or the Judean People's Front) the rulers of the world XD

Having played DEI for a long time (never played vanilla) I find this mod to be very promising. Haven't really started a proper campaign yet, but I am very excited about the depth of units, even if some will perform the same function.

The visual variety is insane and the units look gorgeous. Battles run smoothly, and for me its a pleasant surprise somehow that archers are actually an important part of the army now, since in Dei they got 0 damage. Its also not mindless damage, I had for instance in a siege battle 1 unit of archers shooting a unit of heavy phalanx with 110 or so armor. While they faced my archers, arrows were literally bouncing from their armors and shields (visually stunning), the moment they turned their backs on me, I managed to kill about 20-30 in around 2 volleys. Likewise, my single cav unit charging into 3 archer units got pretty much shredded on the charge, in Dei maybe he would have lost 5 units out of 75 before eating the first archer unit.

That being said, there are some things which prevented me from starting a proper campaign up until now. One of them was raised in previous comments, namely 0 upkeep for the enemy. I found that was related to campaign difficulty and moreover, the enemy has considerable bonuses to battle stats as well depending on the campaign difficulty (aside from battle difficulty setting). For instance, I started a campaign with Epirus on hard and I had the same unit as one of my neighbors (in original stats - check wiki for this), but while my unit had 84 defense or so, his identical unit had 120ish. A smaller bonus was applied to melee attack and an average one to the morale. On easy, everyone is equal and units are cheap af - both recruit cost and upkeep. I firstly thought that maybe some other mods are interfering, but Im not using any other mods. Having checked some values with PFM I think that this is indeed intended as the modifiers are huge. For instance, on hard diff 1 of your decent unit will have ~700ish gold upkeep, while all enemy units will have 0 upkeep (including elites) - the AI modifier being -95 or so, while the player modifier was +100 or so (cant really recall the correct values, the point is there is a huge diff in modifiers).

I spent the past day 'tailoring' the values to match my specific playstyle, mainly, reducing my penalties and their combat stats bonus (this can be done with PFM-open the main pack-db-campaign_difficulty_handicap_effects- the first two tables will contain the stats, the tabs are pretty self explanatory, also keep in mind the following when adjusting: AI: -1 = easy, 0 = normal, 1 = hard, 2 = very hard, 3 = legendary
Human: 1 = easy, 0 = normal, -1 = hard, -2 = very hard, -3 = legendary. Dont forget to make a backup of the original before editing, in case something goes wrong).

Something that I found strange and maybe the developers can confirm or not, was that when I loaded the Imperator Augustus map submod from your website (dont have steam version) I did get the updated map, but there were fewer mercs to recruit. Is that intended?

It's a pity that the discord for this mod is not that active, as I feel there's so much to talk about.

All in all, seems a great mod and I cant wait to start my first playthrough

Dude there are over 50 sub mods for WOTG. If you don't want the AI bonuses use either the Realism sub mod or the Less Aggressive Balanced or the Less Battle Buffs or the Newer Combat sub mod etc. Always play the battle on Normal difficulty. I use the Harder economy and Newer Combat sub mods myself.
