Fires in space are indeed possible if their is a viable source of oxygen. The crew need oxygen to live so if a fire erupts within the ship, if it is leaking into the void a fire will be sustained. Explosions in space of the oxygen sustained type compared to a radioactive explosion like a supernova or pulsar would be minimal, that of course isn't considering the gellar-field drives of battlefleet ships. The size of the ship and the amount of crew and the oxygen needed has to be massive, so fires should be either sustained over long periods of time or burn out in a quick gigantic flare.
In Republic at War some ships have constant active skill(refreshing itself all the time) called Point-Defense system or something like that. It shoots incoming missiles and torpedos.
I really like this mod, definetely will try it out once it's out as long as you promise that the red/blue absurdly huge laser-like beams will be replaced with better animations(or already have). No offense but they ruin the visuals in my opinion. Every other animation is great and I love the ship models!

Those ships are 2-3 km in length. Amount of oxigene inside of them is huge, so the fire can exist rather long time.
