It's a placeholder until we add in all the armor versions in-engine so the player can progressively update through them with research.

You can modify if certain researches don't appear in win conditions.
The plan is to have all the meshes in one model and program it like war-gear, so when a certain research is finished, it modifies the default hardpoint and therefore the visuals. It's the same thing that happens when you upgrade wargear in campaign.

Pick a legion, and then another research will reveal if you are loyal or traitor. Being traitor might mean certain units aren't available and vice versa
