Have you ever wanted to see the world at night, without cosplaying as Sam Fisher in classic carnivores games and mods. Well now you can. Experience dino hunting like you never have before. Prepared to get nostalgic while also being scared to death amongst the moonlit terrains you explore. Bring a lot of ammunition and also bring some spare pants with you. Happy hunting!

Install and Usage Guide

Other Tutorial

Installation: The download contains two versions of reshade, one made for those who use nGlide, the other for those who use dgVodoo.
Simply copy paste the contents of the appropriate folder into the carnivores main folder (where the game executable is) and launch the game. It is already preconfigured to work, and the shaders are trimmed to get the fastest compile times possible. The only thing you need to do is to edit the parameters to your liking.

Usage: You can turn off the nightvision with the 'N' key (changable in reshade), and you can turn on the flashlight with the 'F' key (also changeable in reshade).

!!!!After you done configuring the shader or you like the defaults settings, don't forget to check performance mode in the right bottom corner. Likewise if you want to configure your shaders again, uncheck it to perform better.!!!!

Configuration: This is for folks who do not have any experience with reshade before, or those who want to know what to change instead of tinker with settings.
After you load into a hunt press deactivate the nightvision with 'N' key and activate the flashlight with 'F' key, then press the 'Home' button to bring up reshade config panel.
You should see the following shaders loaded:

  • LUT
  • DEBAND
  • FLASHLIGHT
  • FGFXLargeScalePerceptualObscuranceIrradiance

Under this you should see the tabs of these shaders where you can configure each.
Here are some of the more important changes, but i encourage you to try out what each setting does.

LUT:

This is responsible of removing the nightvision effect from the game. You could also create one yourself but the specifics how to do it are out of the scope of this guide. Google it :).
The most important and effective change you can make is:

  • fLUT_TileAmount
The max is 32 that is a full blue tint, like a really cold night.
Going lower results in a more warmer tint of the colors.

Deband:

This is repsonsible blurring the sky a bit, so it eliminates low quality banding artifacts.
You should'nt really touch this, since above the current settings blurring gets to much, below them is not enough.
But here are the two most important:

  • Standard deviation threshold: Increase for more debanding
  • Weber ratio threshold: Increase for more debanding

Flashlight:

Controls the flashlight properities. The settings here pretty much are self-explanatory, also you don't really need to touch the preprocessor settings.

FGFXLargeScalePerceptualObscuranceIrradiance: This would be too long to explain what it does exactly, but let's just say it is quite important for the night to look realistic. It activates with the lut shader when you turn off the nightvision and it helps make the night more realistic.
The most important setting here is the following:

  • Occlusion Intensity: Increase for more darkening
  • Effect Radius: Decrease this for a more impactful look, increase it to diffuse the area the darkening affects
  • LSPOIRR_SRGB: Change it to 0 for linear color processing, 1 means sRGB. 0 is more dynamic but you need to increase the Occlusion Intensity if you choose it, and also decrease the radius to get a pronounced effect.

Issues: Most of these comes from the fact that these mods are not hardcoded modifications, but rather shaders.

  • No compatibility mode: In the modders edition engine, right now you can use custom menu ambience music with the game executable set to compatibility mode.
This shader does not work with any compatibility flag below windows 7, since there is no way for the dll to hook into the game.
  • No true colors: This comes from the fact that the original colors are not available in night mode because of the green filter, so its a miracle i could restore some with the lut. This is not an issue at night, since in real life we also see somewhat similary. The problem is the flashlight that can litearly shine a light upon these drawbacks. With the flashlight on you will see the guessed colors the lut did restore, and none is accurate.
  • No way to get any event from the game: There is no communication between reshade and the game engine, so i cannot do things like when the hunter dies the flashlight shader also turns off etc. Also cannot make it so that the creatures react to the light.
  • No depth masking on the flashlight shader: This is a good and a bad thing at the same time.

These are the issues that come to my mind first, but i am sure there are more.
Many of these actually can be fixed or improved upon, so maybe i will release an improved version with some custom shader code tailored to the Carnivores games.

Thanks.

And also thanks for the rating. I already have some ideas to improve the LUT and with that improve how the flashlight works. Will not be perfect, but in theory much better than as is now.
