Thanks for the compliments! The shield you're referring to features the lambda, which is the Greek letter for 'S' - symbolizing Sparta.
The greek letter lamda (Λ) is the english (L) , not (S) --in greek (Σ)-- .
In ancient Greece the Spartans were called Lakedemonioi (Λακεδεμόνιοι) . This is the reason the Spartans painted this letter on their shields
Just saying that for the sake of historical accurancy :p

I would use the Apollo sunray shield emblem (2nd from bottom right corner) for a Spartan hero or something. It is the emblem of the Spartan kings.
I can't wait to try this out, btw. :)
Spartans also used a razorback boar emblem for one of their provincial regiments and the gorgon emblem for the regiment from Sparta proper. They used the raven for their Skiritai regiment. Maybe use Skiritai for Spartan commandos.

What resolution do you use for the shields? 128x128?
Well we haven't been too clever about mapping these shields, to tell you the truth. They are pretty high-res though, taking up a considerable space on a 512x512 texture. A bit more than 256x256. I like to work in higher resolutions, having some faith in people having better computers than when the game first came out.
