History:
History 5th regiment of special designation (5 PSU) is relatively short and is dated to the formation of the Slovak Republic in 1993. The first two years was organized as the 3rd Regiment group of special forces, but in 1995 was reorganized and renamed the 5th regiment of special designation Joseph Gabčík. Since 2002, the regiment became a professional unit of the Slovak armed forces.
The regiment draws from the tradition of Czechoslovak paratroopers and explorer of the former 22nd Airborne Brigade (Regiment) deployed in Prostejov and reference Czechoslovak paratroopers in the 2nd World War II, as demonstrated by the honorary title Regiment.
