Set in the Late Victorian Era, Steam & Steel: Total War features 30 factions and 5 sub-factions from the British Empire to the Sultanate of Aceh. The global campaign contains hundreds of meticulously researched regions, as well as unique political, economic, social and AI mechanics. The weapons and tactics of the era are well represented with 500 unique units each equipped with distinct weapons from jingals to howitzers. The culmination of years of development, research and testing, S&S will remain an active project; continuing in its aim of popularizing the history of the late 19th century.

Post tutorial Report RSS Common Issues and Fixes

A guide to fixing commonly encountered issues in Steam & Steel.

Posted by on - Basic QA/Testing

1. Random Crashes

Crashes that occur randomly in the middle of campaigns and battles are generally the result of M2TW exceeding its 4GB limit on slower devices. Apart from applying the 4GB patch (instructions available below), reducing graphics quality will reduce game demands and improve stability.

2. Load-game crashes

Load game crashes typically occur on slower devices when the volume of files being loaded exceeds the M2TW Ram limit. Due to this, it is essential to apply the 4GB patch (instructions available below) which doubles the M2TW RAM limit from 2GB to 4GB. Nevertheless, crashes may still occur on initial startup on account of the number of files to be loaded.

3. Save-game crashes

Save-game crashes may occur due to autosave corruption. This is a common issue for the M2TW engine and can be mitigated by manual saving.

4. EOP Launch crashes

The integrated EOP launcher requires the installation of both Microsoft Visual C++ and Microsoft DirectX. If these are not installed, messgages showing lacking dll files will be shown. Both programs can be found in the folder "eopRedistributables" in the main directory. The respective exe files can be found in their folders within, simply launch and follow the instructions provided.

5. Why Steam & Steel is more demanding than Vanilla M2TW/Other mods

Unlike most M2TW based games, Steam & Steel is set in the mid-19th century and includes a worldwide campaign map. A decision was taken early in development to make the most of the advances in technology since M2TW first launched in 2006. As such, the game contains the maximum possible number of units and regions allowed by the game engine as well as hundreds of extra minor settlements, all of which are custom-made for the era. On the campaign map, the increased intensity of global trade and the HD custom models applied to all settlements pose an additional strain. In battle, the greatly increased rate of fire of both rifles and artillery and their smoke output results in greater demands. Finally, the integration of EOP brings greater functionality at a small cost in performance. Consequently, Steam & Steel is best run at reduced graphics compared with other M2TW-based mods on the same device.

4GB Patch Instructions:

1. The patch file "4gb_patch.exe" is located inside the main mod directory "steamsteel"
2. After launching, navigate to the parent folder "Medieval II Total War"
3. Select and apply the patch to both "kingdoms.exe" and "medieval2.exe"
Note: If kingdoms.exe is unavailable, rename a copy of "medieval2.exe" to "kingdoms.exe" and patch both files

The game crashes whenever I try to load a save file even after the patch. Now, I'm not tech savvy but I got this error at geomod.log:
Error, Geomod v0.6.18 2023-02-26 19:51:53

An unexpected error was met analyzing data\world\maps\base\descr_regions.txt, this file is perhaps corrupted!

Any idea as to how to fix this?

That is unrelated and due to geomod compatibility. Try a fresh installation of v1.01 save-game issues should be completely resolved.

Howdy! Thanks for replying. I'm the guy who wrote that first comment. So, I followed your instructions (total re-install) and I used the 4gb patch. Now, instead of all of my save files crashing the game, only save files past the year 1864 crash. I've also noticed a few, new weird bugs. I play the Moroccan faction, and whenever I try to fight the Spanish prince, the game crashes. Also, some Spanish troops became metallic for some reason. I found that the game crashes less when loading my save files if I don't explore the map, and the different campaigns don't work. Is this a common issue? And am I doing something wrong? Sorry to bother you, it's just that I really like this mod and would love to play it. Cheers! (Also, if this mod has a discord, could I show in better detail the bugs I experience?)

Downloaded the patch and it still fails to launch. I'm using M2TWEOP GUI.exe file (ran it multiple with and without admin launch.) It shows the base game loading menu and then crashes. It could be because of my PC but I downloaded the patch. PLEASE HELP ME I WANT TO PLAY YOUR MOD

Loading any save game autocrashes on desktop. Lowering graphics and applying the 4gb patch does not help. The pc is brand new and fast too. Out of options here.
