The D-4, where the classic design started, at the time it was buildt not one member of the empire would think that the basis of this design would lead the klingon empire in centuries to come.
Model and texture is fantastic. Nevertheless I wonder why the producers of ENT introduce this design especially as D4 after all the D5 has a totally other design but fitting much more to the Raptor class and BoP. It looks too much like D7 which first appears 100 years later. Make no sense in my opinion. What do you guys think?
I find the Klingon ships fit a lot more in the era than say the Romulan Bird of Prey, which really doesn't fit in any way hence why we felt it needed changing.
But in regards to the differences between the classes of Klingon ship I think they each took elements of influence from the three most recognised Klingon ships. The BoP obviously being an earlier incarnation of the B'rel, the D4 being essentially a D7 and the Raptor being a sleeked up V'orcha which makes for instant recognition as Klingon ships for the audience.
In terms of the naming convention there are a lot of real-world examples of military projects where they were either not numbered sequentially as a way of misleading enemies or just a different system (the M1 Abrams replaced the M60 Patton for example).
As you can tell a lot of discussion and speculation occurs between us behind the scenes :P
id like to read more behind the scenes stuff =)
I love this design, after i seen it on trekyards and i dont get why they designed it and modelled it for the ep unexpected then the producers then just said to use a ktinga from ds9. Such a shame.
Still an amazing model :)

Hmm. Enterprise really screwed with the ST canon quite a bit. I understand why... but the massive nerd in me doesn't like it. I see the D7 as the ultimate achievement of Klingon shipbuilding at the time. The idea that a ship from two generations before looks so similar doesn't feel right. The D7 should have been a product of a revolution in Klingon tech, not an evolution.
Love your work as always. I'm glad you at least didn't do what the show did, and use a D7 CG model but call it a D4. I hated that.
When you see them side by side the D4 and the D7 are actually quite different. I know your eyes are immediately drawn to the similarities (the ball head, for example) but the D7 looks altogether far more advanced than the D4.
I'll do that before I launch my fleet to retake the Archanis system :p. I do like the little touches you've made on the D4 like the support struts on the neck.
